I mean I love him as a player but that's a frickin massive gamble.
At the very least he can win the ball in the air and hold up play very well. He's a good player to build around.

who could blame anyone for not wanting to play with Suarez.
49 goals in 48 games last year. Real slouch that Luis Suarez. And he's struggled with his form this year, but so has Nando. He's a good strikemate to have. For real.

Cry me a river, Chelsea have spent almost no meaningful money in like four years now.
And now that they're aging and desperate, you'll see the same old Chelsea. Buying what the frick they want. It's not like they're spending like City has the last two years. Point being, they're more than willing to if need be.

Comolli adds to his collection of unearthed unknown talent with his acquisition of Carroll. Right up there with his Bale and Modric discoveries.

i'm just excited to have an aerial presence again, but 35 million for it might be excessive. Whatever, this whole transfer window is ridiculous.

He's basically hamstrung in all this. If Torres goes, they need a center forward to replace him immediately. There's not a better CF in England right now than Carroll. If this happened earlier in the window they possibly could have gotten Llorente who is an excellent player for much cheaper. If I was them, I'd still go after Llorente.

Llorente has to be tied up in a pending summer deal I'd imagine but I'm with you. If he was available, that's where I'd go.

To be honest, I'd raid Bilbao as much as I could. Javi Martinez looks like a player who could make an impact in the PL, and they have that giant CB who's name I can't remember. I really like that Bilbao team.

I have a hard time believing he was hamstrung into overpaying 15-20 mil pounds for a forward.

However, Bilbao's head, in effect, just said 'F the EPL' a couple of days ago.

From TIA:Daily Mail: Newcastle accept £35m Liverpool bid for Carroll as Reds boss Dalglish plans for life without Chelsea-bound Torres.

I meant simply by time. They feel they need a replacement immediately, and this close to the window closing, he has no option but to pay the asking price. You have to tack on 15-20 million for any English player anyway, and it is the only price Newcastle would be willing to part with. Inflated, yes, but this whole decade's transfer prices have been inflated.

I guess 17 million for Ramires, 18 for Zhirkov, 16 for Bosingwa, 15 for Anelka, 9 for Ivanovic and 13.5 for Malouda don't count.

Ivanovic is the bargain of that lot, even though he does seem pigeon-toed, a la P. Boles.

So Carrol is worth the same as Villa?
Liverpool

Villa was a huge cut rate price so that doesn't count. Same way Van Der Vaart doesn't count.
Plus extra 10 for carroll being english, plus 5 at least for Jan- what do you get?

And because it's too good for the Transfer thread alone:
The fake Jamie Redknapp account on Twitter says "to be fair, it's a great move for Andy Carroll. It is, after all, the only place in England where his haircut is still fashionable".
