In theory why wouldn't this work? Or why might it work?

Form an under-23 MLS team with nothing but American players. Run it like a national team academy. Get rid of the salary cap and pay them well so they don't go to Europe. After you turn 23 you age out and have to go play in Europe or for another MLS team. But in the meantime all of the top young American players are playing for the same club team and building chemisty. Or at least that's how I imagine it in my head.

What aspiring professional would agree to this?
It’s retarded

Us soccer did something like this in the 80’s or 90’s. Failed miserably.

Players would get to stay home. I imagine that would be a big draw. And they'd also be working towards a larger goal. You'd just have to figure out how to pay them and where the money comes from.

23 seems too old but I think Japan has a team in Europe for this purpose.

The best thing to do would be for a group of billionaires to buy a European team and put all the top Americans on it.

Like the Bayern Munich experiment Germany did in 2014

Nah they were out quicking us to the ball tonight. A lot of times they were stepping in front of passes

they don’t want to stay home. They want to go compete in the best leagues against the best players. The World Cup and national teams are important but their career and professional livelihood are more important to them.

Our most talented guys won't want to wait until they're 23 to move to Europe, and even if they did, that would likely stunt their development and potential at the highest levels.
