Just seemed that way when I played and then when I was older many of my friends or random people I knew would complain about how political it was.
Like certain high schools wouldn't play kid cause they didn't play on their club team and shite like that. I'm sure most sports at that age are political but it just seems easy to hide a kid on the bench or at an undesirable position. In baseball, if you can hit or pitch, you're frickin playing.

I know I know. Just seems like there's more room for that stuff to happen in soccer. I might be completely wrong though.

I used to hear the same thing from people all the time who got cut from my high school team. We had 18-20 on each team and all players were on club teams all year long, of course they were better than the weekend rec leaguers. They didn't get picked because of politics, they're just better.

There were/are two main club teams and two main high schools around my hometown. Most would play with each other when they reached high school. But the ones who went to the other high school, full of the rival club team, usually had trouble finding the field or getting playing time they thought they were worthy of. I didn't play but I knew who was good and who wasn't, some of the complaining seemed reasonable to me.
I'm sure it's different around the way, but in baseball all the petty political stuff was out the door by the time I reached high school. Lack of talent REALLY shows in baseball.

I don't think it shows any more than in soccer. I've heard all the same "political" excuses when it comes to the baseball team too, especially since travel baseball is much more popular now. I knew people who were convinced they weren't playing because they didn't play for a certain travel team 3 years prior.
Could some of it be due to prior relationships and "politics"? Sure, but in every sport, the cream usually rises.

Yeah, although I think there's some kind of rule in Louisiana that club coaches can't coach their players in high school. Or maybe there were rumors of that maybe being passed. The advantage you gain is that you play with your peers more often and you're more likely to be known prior to tryouts and practices.

Oh me too. The worst is the parents of these kids drilling it into their children's heads that they're good enough to play but don't because of "evil coach." If it a big deal, make your kid better!

I'm not complaining. Just answering your question, horribly I might add
I didn't even tryout for soccer in high school, although I really wanted to. I thought I could have been a pretty good back defender. All I played was baseball in high school. Once I filled out some I got playing time.

Count me in this group. Now I need to figure out the difference in the leagues and a team to take a liking to. I'll start doing research after the World Cup. Orlando has a team now, that will be exciting.

I think the key is you have to watch some soccer matches where you don't have a vested interest in either team but you find enjoyment from it.
This doesn't happen for most people because most Americans will only watch USA games.
It's also kind of a hard sport to follow, which isn't a bad thing. It just takes kind of a commitment to learn the soccer scene as there isn't just one central league like in football and baseball. Americans are used to the casualness of the sports they follow.

Thats how it was for me. I started watching the EPL after WC 2002 and eventually started rooting for Arsenal. Haven't looked back since.

The heart wants what the heart wants. Honestly the fear of them being relegated and the late season results over the big boys to stay up was the 2nd most enjoyable sports watching experience of my life. Fear of losing a team (easy access to following them on TV each week) was an altogether different motivating factor in rooting for a team. Not saying I would want to experience that annually, but I think I became way more invested than if we would've been bouncing around the lower mid table all season.
