Wow those 31 goals scored while with the Cosmos really tilt things out of balance.

What about the other 500 goals?

Messi
123 appearances for Argentina only 61 goals and no World Cup Championships. Great players carry teams to championships and make the players around them better. Bird, Jordan, Magic etc.
The biggest championship in the biggest sport in the world is the World Cup, it only happens every four years. This only underscores the fact that Pele is the best their ever was that he won nothing one not two but three of those Championships. Messi zero..

GOAT only fits well in one player’s name.

GOATssi or GOATnaldo

Pretty easy decision here.

This is retarded logic. I take it you didn't watch WC 2014, or even know what the sport was like before the 1990's.

Same goes for the the Euros. One could argue the same for Copa America as well. Both of those tournaments undoubtedly field less shite teams than the World Cup does every four years. It’s not the standard bearer for excellence retards make it out to be. Club Football is what matters in the modern game.

Or the guy who claimed Messi carried Argentina to the final in 14.

Do you remember that tournament? Outside of Messi, Argentina wasn't very good going forward. Higuain went cold, Aguero was injured and went cold, Di Maria couldn't finish, and Lavezzi sucked. It's difficult for me to believe that Messi's impact was somehow routine when he created 30% of Argentina's chances that tournament and scored 50% of their goals.

They scored 1 goal in extra time against Switzerland (not Messi). They scored 1 goal against Belgium. They scored 0 goals against Netherlands in 120 minutes. 0 goals against Germany in 120 minutes. Messi is an attacker. They had no attack. He didn't carry anything in that tournament.

Who assisted that goal? Messi created a ton of chances that game. Di Maria was profligate that game in particular.

How did they progress then? Messi created plenty of chances, the most of any player in the tournament, but only one player, Di Maria, finished those chances. That points to what I said earlier, that players other than Messi played very poorly, or at least in Di Maria's case, finished poorly despite creating chances. It's difficult for me to see how a player who created so many chances and contributed to half his team's goals didn't carry the team, as their finishing was appalling. For example, Messi had three goals outside the box, which shows he was more withdrawn than usual, and had to link defense to attack, which means he got the ball 25 yards away from goal. Despite this, he still created the most chances of the tournament, and produced 50% of his teams final goal tally. The fact is that Argentina was not a good team going forward, or at least they were didn't finish the chances they made, is as much on the players who were supposed to be finishing those chances that Messi created. If one of Higuain or Aguero performed it is likely that Argentina wins the WC.

lol, because legends aren't made in the group stage. I don't care if he had 20 goals in the group stage, in the big games he was held in check and the attack as a whole, which he is the focal point of, was dreadful.

Seriously? It's because they allowed 0 goals in every game.

Messi is the one who missed a one on one with the keeper that could have won the World Cup.

I don't recall this. I recall him beating Hummels down the line and playing the ball around the keeper only for Boateng to clear it. I wouldn't call that chance one on one though. Not like Higuain's chance.
