I really enjoy the soccer broadcasts as opposed to other sports. I find that NFL, college football and NBA try many times to cater to the dude-bro demographic.

Maybe Ian had an off day today because they game itself had no rhythm especially the second half, not to mention the game went 120. It was very stop n go stop n go

I like Gus with his yelling. Reminds me of Martin Tyler at times. His timing isn't there yet, and he doesn't know what to do with the down time in the game, which the English broadcasters are masters of. It doesn't help that he has Wynalda with him who is an absolute moron and shouldn't be on the air. Gus will get better. He won't be as good as Darke, but he will get better.

That's the only thing I like about him. Reminds me of the Andy Gray call when Gerrard sent LFC through against Olympiakos with that volley. He's just totally clueless at times, though. Its borderline painful to watch.

Did people expect any more? I mean, he is clueless. The point is for him to learn and get better. His calls for goals are no different from what Tyler tries to do, in all honesty. It's just that Tyler is excellent at navigating the game in its duller moments with questions for the color man, little anecdotes about the players, and candid analysis which is often a front for a very peculiar and specific type of British humor. Fox is asking Johnson to become the American version of that, and that doesn't happen overnight. In fact, I'm surprised at how much he has improve to where I'm much more annoyed with Wyndalda than I am with anything Johnson says. His mistakes have everything to do with his knowledge of the history of the game, and the lack of timing he has on his calls.

Yes. He ended up being correct, but it was WAY too early to mention that possibility.
I would think ESPN wanted him mentioning things that the average fan might not know. Soccer newbs have been watching possible draws all tournament. This was the first two men enter, one man leaves.
