I know people joke about it but will Gus Johnson actually announce the 2018 WC?

I hope not.

People without British accents should not commentate soccer matches in English. It's just as weird as if a British guy were commentating the Super Bowl.

He has already butchered Champions league matches. They are doing this for a reason. They want him to work the kinks out before the WC in 2018.

I honestly didn't think his loud outbursts were bad. Plenty of English announcers scream names whenever a big play happens. My problem is he just doesn't understand the game, so he makes weird comments that don't really fit. Or he messes up a common phrase when trying to use it in a situation. I think he is also used to needing to not have dead air time like in football, so he will spout random facts when they just aren't necessary.

"Robben.....former Chelsea player"

Speaking of dead air. Am I the only one that hates the GOOOOOOOOOOL announcers? I like it when the announcer shuts up and I can hear the crowd and take in the moment. By just screaming goal for 15 seconds, it makes every goal sound like all the others and really takes away from the moment.

They do this over here.

There are just as many horrible British commentators as there are American ones.

Agreed.

So he's an ITV commentator?

Why do people believe this? Knowledge of the game is all that's required, who gives a shite what their accent is. There were/are plenty of gaffes in commentary from British announcers in soccer games. Are they just just supposed to have some automatic credibility because they're British?

There's no legit reason really, it just sounds "right"

Kind of like if you have a woman broadcasting a football game, it will sound shitty no matter how knowledgeable she is about the game.

Find a version of the US-Ghana match with Robbie Savage doing the commentary. Or, frick, watch any match with T&T.

I agree it's more natural and I'm used to it, I just don't think it's by any means a requirement. There are Americans I'm sure who are plenty knowledgeable enough about the game to do a good job. Having said that, Gus is not that guy

I agree. I don't see the game through strictly a British lens so I don't require that an announcer be British. And I don't care what their background or accent is so long as they are a good announcer.

This only applies if you're a knuckledragger.
