There had to have been some pretty negative vibes brewing for Jurgen to make this move. I don't hate it. Landon looked terrible against Mexico and apparently has been shite for LA this year. He's not one of the leaders of the team anymore, if he ever really was. I honestly don't think the team is doomed without him. If anything, it may empower some of the other guys to know Jurgen has enough confidence in them to leave the best player in our country's history at home.

If we have serious hopes of being a future power in international soccer, we are going to have to live with the fact that some formerly great players that may be past their primes will be left out of the squad for some big games/tournaments.

Who was?

Butthurt. Such a great phrase to dismiss valid criticism and anger with a Klinsmann's vain decision. Of course there was a lot of "butthurt".

We want to see the best 23 man team possible. We don't have agendas, unlike certain coaches. Omitting Donovan is sheer insanity.

Yes you do, and I hate to break it to you, Jurgy knows this team more than you.

Sure he does. He also has incentives that influence his behavior that may lead to suboptimal results.

What's my agenda? I have no financial incentive to get Donovan on the team. I am not his agent or his lawyer. I am not even who has invested a cent into a Donovan jersey or an LA Galaxy ticket or anything like that.

I would be just as pissed if Zusi, Cameron, Besler, Howard, Fab, Bradley, Bacon, and Dempsey weren't coming. They've all earned it. I get mad when people who have earned things don't get their due. I guess that is my agenda.

That doesn't mean that he's immune to criticism, and there are managers who know their teams far better than Klinsmann does who get crucified on here, especially when Klinsmann has been the subject of some pretty damning criticism from his players in the past.

Speaking of damning criticism, you have to wonder if Bocanegra and Donovan were two of the anonymous sources.

At this point, I am 99% sure Bocanegra was.

Obviously, playing 0 games at Bayern Munich as a teenager is more impressive than playing 0 games as a teenager at Bayer Leverkusen. Easy.

To be fair, Landon knew going into his sabbatical that it would hurt his chances of going to the WC. That was during one of the most important stretches of WCQs, as well.

I am stunned that he was left off the roster, not that there weren't reasons for his omission, but because I didn't think Jürgen had the stones to actually do it.

Boca was definitely on my short list.

Wouldn't surprise me if Landon was, too.

I'm still so pissed. I actually cried about it.

Look Donovan should be on the roster. That said he wasn't going to be the difference between getting out of the group and not getting out of the group. It's only frustrating because it just reinforces Jurgen's perceived biases.

I had two separate people ask me why I looked so mad earlier today. I think I usually have a very friendly to neutral facial expression and I try very hard not to show my emotions in unrelated settings (i.e. if I am mad about something at home, don't look mad at work, etc) so I knew it was big.

Dude how in the frick do you have any idea if Jurgen has an agenda against Landon Donovan? Do you honestly think Jurgen would make this move if he thought it would be to the detriment of his team. This World Cup is kind of a big deal for him. Landon has been erratic as hell the past year and a half or so. On the field and with his off field stuff.

Jurgen has shown that he really enjoys being the big dog. He has undermined big name players in the past, including Ballack.

Donovan is the big dog when it comes to the US team, as great as Dempsey and Bradley and Howard are.

Besides, he has shown a surprisingly immature side in the past, willing to attack guys for no real reason. In one of his first press conferences, he made a comment about how the US team needs more Mexican and European flair. Kind of a stereotypical and trite comment, but no big deal. Then he follows it up with a comment about how they need to find Mexican and German players so Benny Feilhaber doesn't have to play on the US team any more.

WHAT THE frick? What did Benny Feilhaber (who ironically is both European and South American) ever do to Jurgen? He was just coming off a very good 2010 World Cup but he instantly decided there was something about Benny Feilhaber that he didn't like. No matter what he did in MLS, where he was a very good player, he only got called in for meangingless games with the B and C teams.

He has repeatedly gone after Dempsey and Donovan, saying they wouldn't be considered stars in countries with bigger teams. Why? Who knows? Neither of these guys are arrogant. Neither of them are prima donnas. And up through the Klinsmann appointment, both of these guys busted their asses for the US. They were routinely among the guys who covered the most average meters per game. Yet he felt the need to call them out publicly.

Like I said earlier, it's like sending straight A kids from a prep school to a Scared Straight program. Posturing for no fricking reason.

And in his first game, what did he do? He didn't call up Bradley while calling up a strong side, otherwise. ALmost as if he was trying to establish the fact that he won't make the team just because he's the coach's son (as if anyone besides 15 Big Soccer morons ever believed that).

TL;DR: Jurgen loves to use meaningless and counter-productive motivational tactics for no real reason. Cutting Donovan in place of a 110 pound kid in the German 4th division and a guy who couldn't run a 5.0 40 is another one of them.
