Playing three defensive mids cost us the game against Jamaica.

Who's in charge of team selection again?

Nah, Schweinsteiger thinks Klinsmann is an idiot.

True. Also, no way in hell I would rather have Beckerman on the field than JJ. Although he hasn't been quite as good for the US as he is for Schalke, he's miles better than Beckerman. And considering our mostly awful attacking lineup, he at least gives us a little unpredictability and quality going forward. He catches way too much shite from US fans, imo.

He's pretty predicatble - make unnecessary run forward instead of distributing and staying deep, lose possession, commit foul trying to regain possession.

If he would just sit back and play as a true CDM, he would catch a lot less shite. But when he charges forward and runs into Bradley and others, it's frustrating as hell.

Have you see his Schalke highlights? His forward runs actually look productive.

That's the irritating thing about Jermaine Jones. He plays disciplined, and gritty football for Schalke. For the national team, he has this annoying habit of convincing himself that he's Iniesta, making bombing run up field, and then losing the ball while trying to dribble past someone. Then because he's obviously the main point of attack, he doesn't seem to care too much to even hustle to win the ball. Or there's those times when he gets pissed off about, you know, being a shitty attacking player, and stomps on an opposing player.

Nobody here is arguing that Kyle Beckerman is better than Jones. We're arguing that he's not as bad as many uninformed fans seem to think he is.

Kyle Beckerman is the least of our concerns
I agree. He's been fairly solid at defensive mid (at least the matches Ive seen).

He may be decent at stopping the attack, but I rarely see Beckerman make a good pass.

As long as he's not trying to spray 30+ yard balls around the field, he's a decent enough passer for this level.

Will always prefer Edu to him in that position, though.

Agreed, if for no other reason than I'm more confident in Edu's ability to chase down and cleanly tackle the opponent after the inevitable giveaway than I think Beckerman is.

I actually feel a bit better about Beckerman's ability with the ball than I do with Edu, but it's not really a huge difference. Beckerman obviously has serious athletic issues. It's not always exploited, but it was against Jamaica.

To be fair Jones does some decent stuff at times going forward. See the ball to Dempsey in the Honduras game. He didn't do much outside of that, although really no one did. They all looked like they'd run a marathon earlier that morning.

I wouldn't mind Beckerman sitting in between the back four and Jones/Bradley, against certain teams at least. Maybe Edu in there against more athletic teams.

If Jones and Bradley could figure out how to play off each other and alternate going forward and staying back, they would make for a nasty combo in the middle.

Man, I wish Holden could come back and be the player he was pre Johnny Evans. Bradley would be perfect playing the 6 spot instead of Beckerman. Isn't that basically the position he plays for Roma?

We have good attacking center mids other than Holden. Diskerud, Corona, and Sacha Kljestan can all play the classic #10 creative role. Instead Kljestan as a winger...
