How do European football contracts work?

This might be a stupid question, but say you hear about player X being bought for £50 million by a club, if i'm understanding it correctly that price is paid to player X's original club. So does the player get a cut of the money, and how does that transfer fee factor into said player's salary, or does it?
how are footballers salaries determined? are they a completely separate issue from the transfer fee?

Yes. A club pays your club the transfer fee. Then you negotiate with the new club for your salary.

What's posted above about them being separate is correct.
There are however certain player's contracts that call for some percentage of a transfer fee through their agents' percentage of transfer fee (though each league has different rules on this).
The super agent Raiola has been known for this and also pushing players to jump from team to team a bit more often to create more fees (all the Ibra transfers for example and the recent Pogba transfer).

Generally, players also get about 10 percent of their transfer fee, I believe.
The contracts are completely different than the transfer fees. That's why in the summer you'll hear things like "Real Madrid agrees to 75 million Euro transfer for Mbappe with Monaco, now seeking to complete a deal with the player"
In that case, the transfer fee is agreed upon between all parties, and now Real needs to sign Mbappe to an actual contract (for example 4 years, 12 million Euros per year). Until then, the transfer isn't official.
A lot of the clubs will notify reporters when they make the first part of a deal so there are always rumors of transfers that will eventually fall through.

Although, strangely, some random outlets will report contract plus transfer fee as the deal cost after the fact
