I think we've seen that Zusi is way more productive on the right side.

No.
Zusi has been more productive *lately* because he's actually been in the team. But make no mistake - good Landon > great Zusi.

From what I've seen, the left side is pretty much on lock right now with Fab on the wing and Beasley making overlapping runs from LB while still having the speed to recover. Beas has played our most consistent LB that I can remember in years, the only reason I think some haven't really embraced the idea that he could be starting their in Brazil is because of his age and it's not the position we have grown accustomed to him playing.
If he keeps playing LB like he has played in the hex, allowing Fab to play the LW, we will be pretty dangerous on that side of the field.
As for the right side, that's where Landon is best fit considering Dempsey has the center forward spot locked up. Zusi has been a nice surprise and will provide quality depth next year, but if Landon is healthy and motivated, that gives you a guy on the right side with a high IQ, a good serviceman and another goal scoring threat.

I'll be more than happy to see Landon get back into the side, but I don't think there's much doubt that in the long run this has been good for the team (assuming Landon makes it back), Zusi has been excellent and his emergence just gives us more depth no matter who starts.

Yes, Beasley's held up well so far.... but long term, I think it's a recipe for disaster.
When we get assigned group opponents in December, they'll have 6 months to look for weaknesses.
I'd imagine that a good place to start will be the 5-5, 125 lb, 32 year old forward/midfielder who will have (by that time) about 15 games experience IN HIS LIFE at left back.
The next year really needs to be spent figuring out who our outside backs will be. I love Beasley, but starting him at left back in the World Cup will likely lead to a 2006 USA - Czech Republic moment (because, shockingly.... Eddie Lewis and Bobby Convey weren't LBs either.)

Agree with Sheep here. While I love DMB and what he has done in a pinch at LB, the ideal situation forward on that side for me is Fab at LB and LD at LM. Fab showed last game he can still make those great runs from LB and is much more solid of a defender than DMB is. DMB deserves to be in Brazil for depth and versatility though.

I'm not convinced that Fabian is the answer at LB either.
It's wishful thinking, but I'd like to see an actual defender back there like Lichaj or Chandler.
When shite gets real, you want a guy who is reacting like a defender, not a guy who has to try to think like a defender, then react.
To reference 2006 again, the US defense settled down when Carlos stepped in at left back, in place of Lewis/Convey.

Dude, I was only taking about Zusi. He has shown that he is much better on the right than on the left. I think it would be better to have Zusi on the right and Donovan on the left.

I turned on FSC last night and Landycakes was playing for US. I was surprised he was back already, then I realized I was watching a gold cup replay from 2011.....

All I want for Christmas is a wing pairing of a healthy Donovan and in form Fabian, with a solid, natural left back to boot. Is that too much to ask?

How the Hell do we not have a capable LB? This is America. We breed big, fast, athletic people. I can understand not having someone with incredible ball skills or something similar, but we should have an incredible defense.

Really wish Lichaj would get another chance at LB. he was very solid during the last GC. It wasn't until Bradley moved him to RB and brought in his love child Bornstein that Mexico did anything in the final.

He might not be, but I think he's there next summer. Now if Dolo is healthy and still good enough to play next summer, then he is at RB with Chandler at LB, Fab at LM, Donovan at RM, and I just came in my pants thinking about that

I don't mind the idea of having Lichaj as a versatile backup that could play RB and LB if needed, but I've never quite understood why this board is so enamored with him. There's a reason why he's going to be playing in the Championship next year.
He also can only cut in on his right foot when he's playing at LB. Teams were quickly figuring him out in the Gold Cup, at least as far as going forward. I personally hate having a right footed player at LB, unless he's just a big-time upgrade defensively (and I just don't see that with Lichaj and Johnson). If we're going with a right footed player at LB then I'd definitely want to see Fabian at LM.
