Football teams who are horribly overmatched often play super conservatively and try to keep the score down. It happens across sports, not just in soccer.

When the other team is vastly superior to you in every way, you sometimes don't have many other options. Bunker in, maybe get a counter or two, maybe a set piece here or there and hope to get lucky once.

Actually, I was pretty ticked when that is what they were doing after Altidore went down last game, Keep yelling at them to attack.
