At least there is Balo. Though there was a Vieri, I really think he is more capable of doing something special at any moment.
Agree 100% but I miss the legendary CBs
Yeah, the CBs are solid but not the type of the past couple of decades that usually get mentioned among the top players to ever play the game at any position.
I completely agree that Balotelli is as capable of changing a game in a single moment of brilliance as any player in the world. Agree about Vieri and all the previous #9s that they weren't nearly the play makers Balotelli can be but they were much better poachers.
However, a Totti type behind Balotelli would make Italy close to Brazil, Argentina ect among the favorites.
Cassano is capable of playing that role but see Prandelli's dilemma in starting him in weather conditions like last night (although he is in excellent shape for him).
If Italy would have been down a goal at 60-70 minute mark I bet we would have seen Cassano.
There's a lot to be positive about though, because for the talk of England's youth, there's going to be some great players to emerge out of the Immobile, Insigne, De Sciglio, Destro, Verratti, Berardi, Darmian etc group.

Even today Totti's presence would be immense.
Cringe at the thought of Cassano on the pitch more than 30 min. in this heat. Maybe the prodigal son will finally do something in this cup, seems like we have been waiting 20 years!

Is his heart issue that bad? If you can't play him why bring him to Brazil?
Also, what kind of issue does he have exactly? If it's that bad I'm surprised he still plays professionally, let alone makes the national team.

Cassano
He has some congenital condition but he's fine and that's not the problem.
He goes 90 minutes for Parma often.
The issue with him is simply his conditioning has long been an issue and while he's in the best shape (and form) I recall since he was at Roma he's still a gamble in that heat and humidity which saw so many the 20-25 year olds suffering the final 20 minutes.
Cassano is in much better shape/form than Euro 2012 so he'll play though.

I've got a lot to say, but my Macbook broke, so I will try to consolidate it all since I'm on my phone.
The tl;Dr is that Prandelli has more tactical knowledge and flexibility in his shits than Roy does in his entire body. He was able to almost seamlessly overcome a host of injuries/concerns and still manage to set Italy up in a disciplined and cohesive manner.
Roy did the opposite. He setup Gerrard and Rooney to be scapegoats before the whistle was even blown. Seriously, Gerrard in the holding role of a 4-2-3-1 with four forwards in front of him against an extremely talented and tactically perfect Italian 5-man midfield? If you aren't going to surround him with proper midfield runners, then use him as a sub. He was setup to be ineffective, which he was. Then, he puts Rooney wide to cover for the fullbacks. He would have been better served playing a proper wide player there. If you aren't going to have Rooney as the 10 or striker, he has no business on the field.
That culminates in a losing effort, although I think the shite England is getting from this board is harsh. For the first time in a while, they were exciting to watch. They have technically able players who possess a great deal of pace and creative ability. But when they're set up to fail, they're going to fail.
I would probably take out Rooney and try a 4-3-3. Too bad Roy didn't bring Barry as I think he would have been a good addition. This team still has a decent variety of players who play in tactically forward club systems: Lallana, Milner, Wilshere, Ox and Barkley. Roy should be able to find a formation that doesn't alienate two of his best players in roles where they will inevitably fail.
Of course, Baines, Johnson, and Rooney were terrible individually. The system is somewhat to do with that, probably more so in Rooney's case, but their performances were absolutely inexcusable.
Personally, out of pure curiosity, I'd like to see a front six along the lines of: Gerrard, Henderson, Wilshere, Sterling, Sturridge, Lallana/Rooney

Rooney isn't a winger. He's still their best player but playing him way out of position is doing them no favors.

I agree he's their most dynamic player, but the system will not be built around him, so a sub is probably his best role at this point. He's been shite internationally even you can admit that.
