He was jumping for the header. Not trying to go down.

What I saw was a guy who (a) knew he was getting held and (b) knew he wouldn't make it so he (c) hit the ground.

Smart play, but it was a flop to sell an actual foul.

Defender had his shoulder in his back like he was tackling him from behind in a football game. When I saw it from the front I thought he sold it a little, but the view from behind you can see the guy's shoulder in his back.

You saw wrong. He was making a play on the ball.

Yeah, that was no where near a dive like Fred's. Not even close.

he wasn't being held, he was being tackled from behind.

Had he held him or his jersey, and then let go, it's not called, he fricking form tackled him to the ground.

NCAA defensive coaches will be showing that film to their secondary, on how to form tackle a player

I know, but referees do consider this when awarding a PK.

No, they consider that when deciding if it should be a card (yellow/red), not whether to give the penalty.

K. Didn't realize your perception was infallible. My bad.

For real. I don't even see why this is a discussion.

In the referees opinion the defensive player committed a foul in the box that prevented a goal scoring opportunity. Result = penalty.

Well, your perception seems to be in the minority.

And not speaking for myself, but the rest of these fine folks watch a ton of soccer and I trust their perception.
