While this is a moronic situation (pandering to Qatar money), the European Club Association is livid that they won't be compensated for losses. While it may be mamby-pamby whining, they do have a point in that their wishes are just being ignored.

But an even bigger effect will be that if the WC indeed is held in Nov-Dec, they will totally lose the US market that is not die hard soccer related. Why? FOOTBALL, HOLIDAY SHOPPING, WEATHER, HOLIDAY PARTIES. Did I say Football?

There won't be large outdoor watch parties in freezing weather. People have other things on their minds during that time. Summer is a perfect time for WC as it pertains to the US. Other than baseball, there is not much going on.

So FIFA is now facing two bad situations, none of which are good. But they are full speed ahead, chase the oil money. Maybe in the end, this will end up working in favor of the US possibly hosting the tournament. Maybe more corruption will surface, war threats in the Middle East, or not out of the question, a European boycott of the WC.

I can possibly see the ECA having a showdown with FIFA (the WC is just the latest of several disputes). They could withdraw from FIFA and form their own world tournament. ECA can survive without FIFA, not the other way around. The US Federation would no doubt side with the ECA. It would be earth shattering, but with FIFA's immense corruption nothing is off the board.

Then there's Russia.....

Probably not even close, and at best, it's tertiary to FIFA exces' primary concern of being treated like fricking rockstars

Well, given Putin's ever increasing war footing, I'm thinking that it's a real possibility that WC in 2018 will have some countries boycotting (EU, USA). Things are not getting better on that front.

The ECA situation won't help FIFA on that either. They already may use Russia as a chip to get their wishes per Qatar. But we have much bigger problems in the world than a WC, however, sport and politics somehow always get intermingled on the biggest stages.

My guess is that there will be a showdown between the ECA and FIFA in the near future, and then nothing will be the same anymore.

And yes, FIFA exec board is like a room full of Roger Goodells.

A winter WC basically will alter 3 seasons

not to mention the amount of games missed and revenue lost by clubs.

quote:

The Premier League, Champions League and Europa League will all be affected as they will have to reschedule matches due to be played in November and December.

In the Premier League this season there were 40 games played in November and 60 in December. That's a total of 100 fixtures that would have to be rearranged in England's top flight, were these proposals to go ahead.

If they are going to play in Qatar, winter is a must.

It's playing in Qatar they should abandon.

Yeah, that's not going to happen. You really think the Germans aren't going to show up to defend their title?

I'm not trying to be an arse, but I really don't see a boycott as being a realistic or worthwhile option.

This is an added suck for US sports fans. Summer WC is great because the only thing going on is grass growing, scratching and spitting.

Putting this right in the middle of the end of the NFL and College football will lessen the enjoyment and likely viewership in the US.

About the NFL thing - Qatar is 9 hours ahead so I don't think you will have many instances of WC games conflicting with football games.

This doesn't change my opinion of FIFA and their bullshite. I just don't think this is that big of a deal in the grand scheme of things

Can they not just build domes if they are going to do this shite in Qatar?

Use the University of Phoenix model where they roll the grass out to get sunlight and play indoors.

I'm not talking about direct conflict necessarily although night games in Q would definitely conflict.

I'm more talking about divided interest. Most people have a limit to their sitting around watching sports time.

I can guarantee I will be watching less soccer than I would in the summer.

When competing for the awarding of the WC, they sold some mad ingenious temperature controlled stadiums which theoretically functioned, but now in practice, I believe do not....

Well, given that by then Putin may have shut off the gas to Germany in the winters, and also may have already invaded the Baltics in addition to Ukraine.....that is a very real possibility - defending title or not.

I will take any bet that either the Russia or Qater don't happen as "normal". Actually, I can see one or the other not happening at all.

Now if Russia 2018 goes off as normal, I'd be way OK with that, because that means Russia, Europe (and maybe us) won't be at war. That's way bigger than soccer. But if Russia does invade Ukraine or another former Soviet republic, then I can totally see a boycott. There was a reason Russia waited until after the Olympics to ramp up the invasion of the Crimea.

OR FIFA could change the venue at the last minute to the USA. We'd have many giant football stadiums sitting around empty in the summer, and we could make it work on short notice. But we're talking FIFA.

All I'm saying is, there's a much greater chance that these WC's won't go off as planned, as there is that they will. Politics and $$$$. Don't discount the ECA to make a move to become the new de facto FIFA.

Agree with this.

If Russia does anything dumb politically then it can pretty much kiss it goodbye because no country in Europe that's a a part of NATO would be attending.

If they moved it to England or the U.S. then all the UEFA teams can attend, other than Russia, and the African teams won't boycott either due to the ridiculous racism over there.

If Russia actually starts a war with the rest of Europe, obviously teams won't be playing a world cup there. But the situation as it is right now is not going to cause a boycott.
