You have to love those matches where your players are either running in mud or on ice while your opponent looks like they're not bound by any of the laws of physics when cutting on a dime.
They must have read me say that I was enjoying myself.
It's like clockwork. Win a few titles, suddenly my squad just refuses to play. I'm sitting back defensively and somehow my entire squad is pressing no one can catch Van Persie. I guess it was time for me to lose a few so that I didn't forget about all those packs that could have prevented this.

I have an 80 rated squad of mostly Spanish players with a few foreign La Liga ones to fill it out. (It started as a 4-3-3 that was split right down the middle between Spanish players and Portuguese ones.) No superstars or special cards, but I have fun with my team that features Rodrigo, Muniain, Tello, Callejon, Illaramendi, De Marcos, Tremoulinas, Oblak. Lots of pace and dribbling.
I'm content with those guys and have the contracts to go far with them in online play. (Just won Division 10 or wherever you start.)
My question for the FUT vets is where do I go from here? What's the strategy for snagging the special cards and building the super teams?

Special cards are limited edition pack pulls. TOTW is every Wednesday, TOTY/TOTS is at the end of the calendar year and the season, etc. For example, that Purple card I got was Hero card because Gray won the Championship's POTY award and was available in packs for 2 days or something.
Basically, you can either gamble on packs, which isn't worth it if you aren't Riseupfromtherubble over here, or just build up coins through matches and working the market a little here and there and buy them after the initial price surge at release.
Because TOTS is about to release soon, the entire market's going to crash so hold out on buying anyone too big for a bit. A lot of people sell their squads before and then buy them back cheaper, but that's a big gamble, especially if you have a card that there may only be a few of them on the market at any given time or whatever else.
If I've learned anything, it's that a solid team from 79-83 with 100 Chemistry in the right formation can beat any team you match up against. I had an 88 rated team a few years ago that never played up to its potential while my cheap arse 82 Serie A team ripped shite up in Div 1. So really, unless you luck out and pack a lottery ticket in the form of a legendary or something, don't worry too much about to special cards.
EDIT: Fair warning, though, I just got slaughtered for the first time in quite some time, but I honestly have no answer as to how or why it happened. So you may want to hold off on taking my advice at the moment.

There are tutorials on YouTube for a slow build--but basically you have to flip cards. Buy a card below market value and sell at or above market value. It takes time and patience but it pays off. When I'm doing this, I set my min/max coin filters and move that maximum value until a few cards pop up, those are going to be the cheapest of that player. You also have to keep in mind that FIFA taxes transactions on the transfer market. Doesn't have to be players either. Managers and kits for well known clubs can fetch a huge profit.

Fernandinho has without a doubt one of best long shots I've ever used. I just keep scoring goal after goal like the one I linked earlier with him. I scored one from at least 40+ yards out top shelf with no chance for the keeper.

I just google "futhead squad builder" and click the first link.
I do it from my phone. Just start typing a guys name after you've clicked on a position and it brings up all the cards that have that name

I just built that squad last night, I'd sold off most of my MLS players previously. I'm scared to play with them in Div 1 right now. My games are usually pretty close with the megasquad, though I did wreck shop last night. I beat a guy that has won the D1 title before

I went against all of my better judgment and bought a mega pack with coins for fun since I like to party. Packed Sergio Ramos, which is pretty neat. I guess I'll have to finally put together that La Liga team I always avoid using.

Yeah, I may do that, especially since his value's about to absolutely tank. I wanted to try him out a time or two, but I'd just waste coins doing that so I'll likely just sell him now.

I used my online draft coin on my phone while laying bed this morning and played the game before doing anything else today and got fricking wrecked I think I've done 3 total drafts(two of them last year) and I've never even come within a goal of winning. I know there's drafting formulas and whatnot but that's sterile

Played two games when I got home with the megasquad and got ran off the pitch. Switched to MLS squad and won 2-0 (though to be fair both goals came from 93 Pogba when he subbed on for Pirlo)

I switch between the 2 pretty often and it doesn't really have many adverse effects.
I'm 5-0 in D1 seasons right now really feeling solid about a title run here. Really wanna see my ranking if I get it done
