Fantastic Donovan piece on Grantland

Interesting article.
I wonder if the problems enumerated in the article have to do with the American psyche and sport. We don't expect our sport stars to be thoughtful or intelligent. In fact, we are surprised when they are, or when they act in any way other than audacious, bombastic egomaniac. Hell, there is at least one post every couple of days on the MSB which provides examples for this.
I think Donovan's concern about his fame was framed in very sensitive terms. We forget that he is just a human being after all, one who happens to be very good at a sport that we've been terrible at for most of our history. He certainly never asked to be our savior. It makes his insistence on listening to Five For Fighting's "Superman" all the more telling.

Progressive thinking when it comes to athletes is one of the few reasons this sport is ostracized here.
You put some of those quotes from Donovan in that piece on the MSB and the first responses would be "gay", "f@g", "fairy", etc.

Well we still adhere to a lunchpail, down to Earth sort of Protestant ethic that hasn't really existed, at least not ubiquitously, since the 60's, especially when it comes to sports. Or maybe I spend too much time on this board. I think it's rather ridiculous, either way.

I guarantee you that if more people knew Deuce's story from poverty to rapping his way to the EPL, the more "blue-collar" sports fans would at least not feel emasculated for watching the USMNT.

I wouldn't. I was fighting the good soccer fight for four years on the MSB until we got this board. I rarely post there anymore.

I think that he gets more interesting as more information comes out about him. fricking off to Cambodia while you're supposed to be playing soccer is kind of weird.
He also definitely has a mean streak apparently fueled by Five for Fighting: the throat slit, his assault on Rafa Marquez's career, the Mexican media embargo, and that goal against Slovenia.
I think that he keeps Landon Donovan hidden pretty well.

He's obviously coached himself up pretty well, because back when he first broke into the USMNT picture, he was this bleached-blonde SoCal punk kid that was a bit of a lightning rod. One thing about him that you don't really hear about is how he was involved in that 2001 incident on the pitch that paralyzed a man and later died from complications. It wasn't his fault, but he was forced to grow up pretty fast after that.
In terms of American superstars that represent their respective sports, Donovan is by far the most complex.
One of my favorite things about this Gold Cup is not only how well he is playing, but also that he really seems to be enjoying himself out there. Compare his reactions and mannerisms now to the hat trick game he had against Scotland last year and the difference is night and day.
