Do you really think Italy is the second best team?

There is no way you can put them ahead of Portugal.

I think they're at Portugal's level definitely. They're not above Germany, though. I think Germany was managed to a loss, but they're much better.

As for that, class by Spain for greeting them at the steps. Italy has all the reason in the world to hold their heads up. Those last two goals were with a man down. Balotelli is going to be hungrier than ever and showed a ton of heart.

What was pretty impressive from Spain was that for all the criticism of their static play they totally changed it up today.

They sped up their attacks and valued killer balls more than back passes to retain possession.

It's telling that Italy had more possession than Spain until they went down to ten men.

Their 4-6-0 was much more effective breaking quickly with runners coming from everywhere than simply dominating possession.

Spain silenced a lot of criticism today about their ability to modify their style.

Agreed. They came out and played the way we all knew they could. Makes you wonder what they were doing the rest of the tournament.

congratulations to spain, but I lost some respect for them with their end of match antics. i know I will catch hell for this, but piling it on when italy was down to ten, trying backheels, celebrating in the corner was too much. I still respect xavi, iniesta, silva but could give a frick about the rest of them. Don't get me wrong, they were the best team of the tournament.

I also wish ian and steve would've gotten off of spain's dicks. shite, they were acting like the game was over and spain were scoring at will at 45 minutes. Mario didn't get any clear chances and di natale couldn't convert. Game could've gone differently.

Will definitely be cheering for anyone but spain when the next WC comes.

It really is.

What stands out so much to me is that players like Iniesta/Xavi etc take defense as seriously as making beautiful passes.

In just looking at the Semis and Final, Italy was fairly successful in taking the ball off both teams during attacks and often in fairly dangerous positions. However, the way Spain's "attacking" players immediately hustled their asses off to buy time and prevent counters couldn't have provided a more stark contrast.

Some of that is tactical awareness but a large part of it is simply desire to win as a team.

I think the backheel was to 'giftwrap it' for Gigi.

Italy played well today, I thought. Really unfortunate about Chiellini and Motta, particularly the latter.

Italy did play pretty well. Spain was better and created more chances but anyone who didn't think Italy have a decent chance until going down to ten is just wanting to talk shite.

Even down 2-0, the chances of whether the next goal came from Spain to put it away or Italy to make it a nail biter seemed about 50/50 with Spain not converting some chances but also Italy getting pretty clean looks at goal.

that said, I'd still have put my money on Spain if Italy had nabbed back a goal with eleven men. However, it's too bad as the match was kind of a dud after Motta's injury when the second half had started in a way that made a 4-2 finish look as probable as 2-0.

Spain deserves all the credit though and then some for getting the tactics much better than in the first match:

As I mentioned above, that Spain conceded some possession in order to hit on counters was the right move. (I would call it brilliant if not for the fact that almost have of us have been wondering why they didn't do it a bit more from the beginning).
It was 4-6-0 champagne, instead of molasses, football.

Do you think Italy's decision to play 4-4-2 instead of 3-5-2 influenced the outcome? Despite it being an emergency formation based on injuries in the first match, it seems like the perfect formation to have a go at Spain, especially when they use the false 9. I wonder if anyone will give it a shot in 2014 against Spain.
