Looking at the Germany roster, specifically their midfield, I'm curious as to why guys like the Bender twins and Kramer didn't make it over someone like Weigl. Can someone like SCH or Hendo explain this to me?

I haven't watched many Germany games lately and so I don't even know who's been playing regularly. Weigl is very, very good. As far as the Bender twins, I know that Lars has been useful because he can play midfield and fullback but so can Joshua Kimmich so I feel that Kimmich was the one in direct competition with Bender. Plus Emre Can is listed as a defender in the squad but we all know he can play in the midfield as well. A lot of versatility with the young German players.

Kimmich and Weigl are 21 and 20, respectively.

Diarra and Kante can do the same job, and I'd venture to say that Kante can do it better at the moment. I can't imagine Diarra can run as much as he once did. Rabiot and Kondrogbia would maybe be slightly more useful. That's not to mention Hatem Ben Arfa who was utterly fantastic this year, or Ousmane Dembele who was also excellent this year, and looks to be as big a star as Coman. That back line is also hella old. Jallet, Evra, and Sagna are fairly old, and Evra hasn't played up to his former level. A player like Dennis Appiah or Djibril Sidibe would have been a braver choice considering there appears to be a dearth of RB's in the France squad.

I was very disappointed to see Hatem Ben Arfa miss out.

I'm just happy for Diarra.

He got fricked in Russia by that bitch Smorodskaya, had a great year at OM. And his relative was killed in the Paris terrorist attack.

Is he worthy of being on the squad...maybe, maybe not.

But Lass is awesome.

I don't care for Lass one way or another, but the choice is odd, especially with other very old players on the team. A midfield of Lass, Pogba, and Matuidi has one weak spot, which is Lass, as he can't run as much as Matuidi, and can't do anything as well as Pogba, so I'm failing to see the reasoning in bringing him (or Jallet, or Sagna, or Evra, or Gignac). I wouldn't be surprised for him to start, as the strength of the French team will be Pogba, and I think Deschamps wants Lass to take defensive pressure off Pogba, because where else will the creativity come from? Cabaye?

It's just a weird choice, given all the other options.

Yeah he seemed to be a dribbling machine this year. Another surprise is that only one North African made the team. Surely a player like Fekir would have made it if he were healthy.

Cabaye is shite.

And after the last few French squads, character guys like Lass who aren't fricking terrible, are worth something.

Who do you replace these guys with? Sagna was City's go-to RB for the CL. Evra just signed a new 2 year deal with Juve. I don't know much about France's RB and LB depth though to be honest.

Up top, without Benzema, they have Gignac and Giroud. One has to back up the other. I was also surprised to see Lacazette miss out.

Well the petulance had as much to do with Domenech as with the players themselves. And yet Deschamps chooses Gignac, who was despised by the 2010 squad, and isn't the goalscorer Lacazette and Gamerio are, plays in an inferior league, and can't particpate in the build-up like Giroud, and can't get behind the back line like Martial.

And somehow Deschamps chooses an out of form Evra who was the leader of the petulant camp for a number of years. So I don't believe that line of reasoning at all. Evra was king count for like 6 years. And maybe Lass has matured significantly, but he certainly didn't appear to be a high character guy when he forced his way from Chelsea to Arsenal to Portsmouth to Real Madrid in the space of 15 months.

Seems like Gameiro had a great year. Not sure how that would compare to Gignac, since I hardly watch Liga MX.

Digne is a good option. I already named two RB options above. Sidibe is the player that seemed to have lost out.

Also Gignac and Giroud aren't at all similar players. Gignac likes to face the game head on, but he doesn't contribute to the attacking play like Giroud, who excels with his back toward goal, or Benzema, who dropped deep to allow third runs in-between the fullback and the centerbacks. France's game has only become centered on Giroud because of Benzema's absence. Gignac and Giroud aren't like for like players.

Nah, I wasn't saying that they were. They are definitely different types of players, but seem to be the only true strikers on the squad without Benzema there.

I don't know those RBs you listed FWIW, so I guess I'll try to educate myself.

Seems he's the opposite. Instead of choosing exciting young players, he's relying on an old back line to get him through a month long tournament. He might be as tactically regressive, but it'd be hard to.

Gignac shouldn't be tainted by the Liga MX label

If he didn't play for shitshow Marseille, he'd still be in France

Haha, I didn't mean it to be condescending. I just couldn't recall Dennis Appiah's name at that moment.

Martial and Griezmann can play the striker role, but it depends on how Deschamps sets the team up. Sissoko can also play wide, which gives them some flexibility in how they employ their front players.

He's always been a borderline national team player. That's his level. It doesn't matter what league he plays in.
