You see high school kids/ parents all the time think they have a shot at upsetting a powerhouse like a "John Curtis or a West Monroe". There's no salary cap there and there certainly isn't parity, but what is there is hope, or faith in your kids. Plain and simple the belief that if you work hard, give it all you got maybe you can pull the upset or you'll give it all you got trying. You don't concede that it's impossible before even stepping foot on the field.

That is just a terrible analogy and you should feel bad.

LHSAA football split because the majority of coaches admitted that they had no chance of beating the established teams.

They split cause they want a level playing field. Otherwise 1000's of fans of teams playing those teams wouldn't show up to watch a game they have no shot of winning. They hope that maybe this game is the time. It never is but still.

So why do they have the mindset that they have no shot at winning? How is that any different than what you are arguing against with regards to US Soccer?

There is no such thing in any sport and there shouldn't be.

Players/Fans don't have/ don't want that mindset. I'm sure they understand the likelihood of winning is small, but they believe that maybe this time is the time they win, and every once in a while it happens. That's why they show up.

Hell I've been going to CL games for as long as I remember, and every year I believe that maybe this is the year they put it all together and make a run. I may be naive but I guess that's what it is to be a "normal American" fan, and I'm not alone cause every year 2-3k other dumbasses show up and sit through every game right along with me.

The players and fans shouldn't have to hear from the coach that there is no shot, and I've never seen a one quote from any coach saying they have no shot against one of those teams.

Sure you get the "We have to player our best game" , " Our backs against the wall" , " It's going to be tough game" but you never here " We have no shot at beating John Curtis !"

quote:

There is no such thing in any sport and there shouldn't be.

Having a school with players that are from 15-20 square miles around the school competing with schools that have kids from 8 parishes and 2 different states is in no way fair and it shouldn't be like that, but that's for a different discussion.

Also the coaches didn't admit anything. If you look at the quotes from the coaches, at least in my area didn't want the split despite the principal's of the schools voting for it. Now I guess they could just be fronting, but you don't see them admitting that in public.

Well I'm heading to bed.

Is ESPN overblowing it? Of course it's what they do with every single sports story.

Are they "making it up"? Of course not. The quote is pretty clear and self explanatory.

"Fine and dandy" isn't a story, and doesn't make good news. So they sensationalize BS to make it interesting. I can't stand the media here.

I love how people are emphasizing how much they hate the American media as if it is better in foreign countries.

If you want to talk about straight up making stuff up go read the transfer thread. Europe is much, much worse.

ESPN is to sports journalism what MSNBC is to politics. If you're looking for fact based accuracy, you've come to the wrong place.

I said I hate the media here. I didn't say media in other countries is better. Quit being so defensive.

Well emphasizing here is clear insinuation that it is better somewhere else. Which countries' journalism do you find more likable?

My question is this...

How can Lalas say anything about Klinsmans statement when Lalas said he didnt think they would get out of our group.

ESPN's just pissed because they based their USMNT marketing on the "I believe" slogan.

Lalas is a pundit, Jurgy's the manager. Big difference.

He said realistic goal. What's realistic in your opinion? 20%? 10%? 5%? 1%? Bc we probably have a less than one percent chance of winning the WC. It doesn't mean they aren't going to try Jesus Christ. "THEN WHY EVEN SHOW UP OR WATCH MIGHT AS WELL JUST FORFEIT?" For god sakes, no one, including klinsman, is saying its impossible to win the whole thing or that the team isn't going to give 100% every game. It just makes no sense to define your tournament that way when you're in the position the Americans are.

Would pelicans fans be pissed if Monty Williams or Dell Demps came out and said before next season, "winning the nba title this year isn't a realistic goal, but we think we can make the playoffs and make some noise?"

SAO PAULO, Brazil — Much has been made of Jurgen Klinsmann’s recent comments regarding how unrealistic it is to expect the U.S. Men’s National Team to win the World Cup this summer, and many people have come out and publicly disagreed with the head coach’s stance.

The U.S. players are not among those people.

Following their open training session at Sao Paulo FC’s practice facility on Wednesday, several of veterans echoed the controversial sentiments of Klinsmann by saying that the primary focus this summer should be on getting out of the group stage. The players believe that only then can they turn their attention towards accomplishing something bigger in Brazil.

“The most important thing is we have to get out of the group stage,” said midfielder Alejandro Bedoya. “After that, it’s anybody’s game really. You play any team after the group stage, you’re obviously already confident and you’ve got some motivation from advancing out of the group stage. It’s football, anything can happen.”

The U.S.’s measured approach ahead of the World Cup might be a surprise to casual fans or those who tune in once every four years given that it doesn’t fit into the usual American psyche of trying to win it all. But those who have been paying just the slightest bit of attention in recent years are aware that the U.S. has a tough task ahead of itself due to Group G having no pushovers.

There is Ghana, the African powerhouse that has eliminated the Americans from the last two World Cups; Portugal, who boast reigning FIFA Ballon d’Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo and a bevy of other talented players who play for some of the top clubs in the world; and a Germany team that is stacked from top to bottom and considered one of the favorites to hoist the World Cup trophy in Rio de Janeiro on July 13.

While most pundits outside of the U.S. are not giving the Americans much of a chance to advance from what is considered by many to be the Group of Death in this summer’s competition, Klinsmann’s side is solely focusing on what it can control.

“It’s not important what the people outside say,” said midfielder Jermaine Jones. “It’s important what is inside of the group. We know that we have a good group and the focus has to be game to game.”

The focus is just that right now, and part of the reason why Klinsmann was not too keen on answering a question about Portugal – the U.S.’s second group-stage opponent – during his press conference on Wednesday.

He and the rest of the U.S. team are strictly focusing on their group opener vs. Ghana right now, as that match in Natal on June 16 will likely play a determining role on if the Americans can meet their stated goal and possibly surpass it.

“Look, we haven’t won a World Cup before so you can’t go into the World Cup saying, ‘Oh, we have to do what we’ve done in the past,’” said forward Jozy Altidore. “You come here obviously with that dream in the back of your mind, let’s not be silly. At the same time, you have to be honest and say, ‘There are some teams that maybe are a bit more favored than obviously we are to win the tournament.’

“Saying all that, you try to take it one game at a time and see how far you can go. Then, as it gets closer – hopefully, if we get closer to the end – then you start to (think of a winning it all).”

well next time maybe he will just lie to you to make you feel better. and give you the bullshite/ vanilla: "we are going to try our hardest" speech

First, this was to take pressure off of his team. Coaches from all over the world do this all the time by setting goals and not looking at the big picture. playing one game at a time approach.

Which if you read the entirety of the article and didn't drink the ESPN koolade headline, you would have seen.

He said basically that the focus should be getting out of the group and not winning the world cup.

quote:

Hell I knew a guy who played for ULL the last time they came to Tiger Stadium that believed with all his heart that they were going to upset LSU.

Well if you want to go through this analogy.
ULL
Alabama
LSU
Ole Miss
are all in a group next year. ULL has to beat/tie all three to advance. Then, they have to beat Ohio State, Oregon, Oklahoma, and Florida State to win the national title.
You are asked by someone who doesn't know football at all if you are going to win it all. what is your response?
mine would sound something like JK's. yea we are going to focus on winning our group and then go from there.
Or i would call the guy out for a fricking absurd question to begin with.

Please go find me a quote from Brad Stevens or Danny Ainge saying the Celtics would contend for the nba title this year. Or the Astros manager or Jim crane saying they're going to win the World Series. Or Gus Bradley saying the jaguars are going to win the Super Bowl. Or a 12 or over NCAA tourney coach talking about winning the whole tourney before their first game. You won't, bc that's fricking absurd.

Yep. Like others have said, this looks like something that was lost in translation. Just think about when college football coaches get asked at the beginning of the season if they will win the national championship. Nobody ever says "YES! We expect to win it all!" No. Almost all of them say that they are focused on the next game and then will go from there. This is basically what JK is saying.
