I think we go to the 4-4-2/4-2-3-1 formation with the team depending on the opposition.
I think Carroll will come i for when/if we play either a tall team or one that is vulnerable to headed goals. Against others i think /would like to see, Rooney up top by himself, with Young in the hole and Walcott on the right and Milner on the left....his work rate and defensive capabilities dictate he will play.
As for the game, England deserve the win, Stevie g played well, but was definitly at fault for the Mellberg goal, he completely loses him, also i think he tried too hard for a goal, shooting from a 30-40 yard free kick with under 5 minutes to go in a close game, and on a break away he took a shot away from Oxlade-Chamberlain who i think was in a better position.
Much better game for Englnd and i dont expect to see us concede 2 goals from dead ball situations in a game for a long time.

Why are Chelsea fans so obsessed with this? They are two completely different players and literally cannot play together. England is without a doubt better with Gerrard on the pitch, but an argument could be made for better club player.

Just read through the read and the claws really came out in this one. Some of you guys are complete bitches when it comes to sticking up for your team.
I was really tired, so I took a nap at halftime and missed right. Thank god for ESPN3. What a fun match.
Walcott clearly has the goal of the tourney and definitely the MOTM.
Gerrard is a complete badass and England's best non-back four player when Rooney is not on the pitch (Cole has a case).
Zlatan is fricking awesome. I love polarizing figures. Olof Mellberg should have gotten the brace. At least he can take solace in his perfectly coiffed beard.
As far as the goalie debate, Joe Hart is not even the best goalie in Group D. You guys forgot about Hugo Lloris. IMO, Neuer, Casillas, Buffon, and Lloris are my top four keepers, but this is such a difficult position to evaluate, so I respect all opinions, except for Victor Valdes.

Like I said, it is a hard position to evaluate. Hart could easily get there, but I would have him no higher than six. My bias puts Timmy at 5.

Only thing i dont like about Hart is his distribution, not easy to evaluate from tv, but you see it from the over head shots or seeing him in person(not that i have a bunch only 2 or 3 times). But he can often hold on to the ball too long and miss counter attacking opportunities - something England will need to take advantage about.

Gerrard hasn't consistently played that CAM role at LFC since Alonso left. I don't think England has ever really played him there. He has played that position in the past, with a lot of success, but since he has gotten older he hasn't pushed forward as much. Whereas Lampard is as attacking as you can get for a mid.

Benitez thought Gerrard's best position was at CAM... and he preferred Torres as his lone striker. the last two managers seemed liked they preferred to have 2 strikers on the field with Gerrard played deeper.. He still likes to get forward though...
I think Gerrard is far more versatile than Lampard, and could probably play any position in the outfield...

And he has done that for England. He has done everything his country has asked him, and has missed countless LFC matches because of it

Definitely his biggest weakness. But his hands are the best in the world IMO. No one plays with stronger hands. His shot stopping is unmatched.

It's too bad Lampard got hurt, I would've much preferred a Gerrard/Lampard midfield duo even though it hasn't really worked in the past. Scott Parker is hard to watch, plus they have Milner in there for added defensive help.
