Dike Drama

Under the original conditions of the agreement, Dike’s loan terminates on May 31, but the Lions will gain the right to recall the striker after May 3.

Barnsley want to keep Dike through the playoffs, however OCSC is not really happy with the chance of him missing up to another month of the MLS season. The teams are currently negotiating an extension for the duration of the playoffs.
OSCS has scored 1 goal through 2 games so far, and it came on an absolutely absurd Nani backheel. The attack has been very bad of late.
This is a tough one. My brain is saying you have to let him play the season out, but my heart is saying we need to recall him as soon as possible or get some serious compensation.

Will be shocked if they don’t strike a deal for Orlando to get paid and let dike showcase in the playoffs. Makes all the sense for Barnsley to move a few chips in now for the potential financial windfall of promotion payoff. And I personally think dike has played his last minutes for Orlando.

I think this was the best case scenario for both clubs.

Let’s be real, I think Orlando did that on purpose. They couldn’t have known he’d lift Barnsley, but the timing of the contract meant one of two things:
1). Barnsley’s season would essentially be done with no promotion hopes and Dike could come home to help the Lions,
-or-
2). They’d somehow have a meteoric rise to a playoff spot and this would put pressure on Barnsley as it is right now.
Barnsley was had at the negotiating table, methinks.

Not really. If you told them in January that Dike was going to carry them to the promotion playoffs, they would gladly pay $2m (or whatever the price may be).

They should have paid that then, there is no way he is going for that now.

Looking at all the possible eventualities, it seems like Orlando knew a bit more than they were letting on. The odds certainly worked in their favor, but it may not have been all that “in question to them.
After all, they have had that 10m price tag set for a good bit now.

That's simply to go from ~12th place to the playoffs to possible promoted. Not as a permanent transfer.

Orlando City star striker Daryl Dike will stay with Barnsley for the Championship playoffs after the two clubs reached an agreement on the terms of Dike’s loan.
The Lions will not exercise their right to recall the 20-year-old striker until after the conclusion of Barnsley’s run in the Championship playoffs, according to a source. In exchange, Barnsley will pay Orlando City a fee that was previously not included in the loan.

I think this is the most logical way to handle this. Throw a mil or two at Orlando to keep him for a chance of getting promoted through the playoffs.

Does Orlando City get that money in total for GAM or does it go to MLS? I saw we opened up an international spot earlier this week, so that money could go a long way to bringing in a striker.

A club shall receive 95% of the corresponding transfer or loan fee revenue from any transaction involving a player that is NOT a Homegrown Player or a U22 Initiative Slot Player.

The club may assign up to $1,050,000 of the transfer/loan revenue as General Allocation Money.

The remaining balance of the club's share (if any), and which cannot be traded, will be distributed by the League to the Club as cash.

So Orlando will get 95% of the fee. Up to $1.05M can be converted to GAM, the rest is cash.

MLS rules are so fricking confusing

Garber has created so many shortsighted rules and regulations that it's a convoluted mess.
At some point, you just have to throw caution to the wind and let every franchise operate as it's own separate entity.

At this point I say go for it. They need to just massively raise their salary cap and do away with all the DP stuff. It’s served its purpose.
Posted on 4/30/21 at 6:45 am to cwil177
Th U22 Initiative that was just added does essentially raise the cap by >$1.2M for those that use it.

Will never happen
The league can only function as a collective bc it’s not profitable
