Nah.

Messi will always be a better player than Ronaldo for me because of Messi's playmaking ability in addition to his goalscoring record.

People forget pretty much everything prior to Euro '16 and the last couple CL finals.

People also forget how terrible Argentina looked in 2014, and how much Messi carried that team. He scored 50% of their total goals, and created the most chances of the tournament.

Why do you keep saying Messi carried them when they scored like 1 or 2 goals in the KO round

Did he or did he not score 50% of the goals they scored that tournament? Did he create the most chances of that tournament? Higuain and Aguero were trash that tournament too. Di Maria stepped up, but that team was most definitely carried by Messi.

They scored 2 goals in the knockout round despite multiple extra time matches

This isnt a good argument when CR7 has currently scored 100% of Portugals goals this world cup. And that is 4 goals through 2 games

Messi scored 4 goals total in 2014 in 7 games.......

Lol just looked and they played extra time in 3 of 4 matches and Messi had zero goals in the knockout rounds.

We've discussed this before, and I know I won't convince you, but that team was set up to defend and relied entirely on Messi. Aguero and Higuain were terrible that tournament, and Messi had to receive the ball far from goal. He still created something like 13 chances during the knockouts, with only one of those chances leading to a goal. He still played really well, and was the only reason why Argentina even went to the knockouts.

It is when people talk about how good Argentina's forwards are. Higuain and Aguero weren't good that tournament at all. Messi received the ball fairly deep, and was still able to create. That Argentina team was set up to defend, and that's what they did. Messi still created the most chances of the tourney, which was what he was tasked to do.

I’m no Messi hater and I’m not saying he sucked or anything but pretty clearly their defense is what carried them

You mean like 4 of the last 5 CL finals with a 3 peat and a euro 2016 win too?

Sure, and frankly given their midfield problems as evident by their performance this time that was the best move. Messi was still Argentina's best player that tourney. If one of Higuain or Aguero stepped up (especially Higuain), they may have won the WC.
