CNN: Iranian government threatens team and their families ahead of USA match.

The government has met with and threatened the Iranian national team and their families with violence, imprisonment and torture if they do not sing the national anthem or if they partake in any form of protest.

Maybe, Alexi did say they approached that game in 98 as just another game but it meant so much more to the Iranian players than just a game.
