And thus the reason I asked.

One reason soccer never takes off in the States?

Because so many of the existing fan base are douches and new fans that might be interested are like "frick that sport." I'll stick to football, baseball and basketball.

Dude don't let some of these a-hole "experts' get to you. Go back and read some of the prematch and in game posts.

"Why is Omar Gonzalez playing? He is terrible?". Gonzalez has a great game against Germany.

"Why is Yedlin coming in? He is only 19" Yedlin has a great game against Ghana and Belgium.

"What? John Brooks? Why?" Brooks gets the winner against Ghana.

Then of course the best one. "Julian Green instead of Landon Donovan? Are you fricking kidding me?" We all know how that turned out.

Bottom line, for all the shite some of the assholes try to give new posters and act all high and mighty, they don't have a fricking clue what they are talking about either.

Bottom line is you train a guy like Russell Westbrook to play soccer his whole life and he is likely the GOAT. The dude is bigger, stronger, faster, and more athletic than the best soccer player in the world

Except he's really dumb. There's a reason they call the best soccer players in the world geniuses.

We actually have something of a "golden generation" in the making.

Beyond Green, Yedlin, Brooks, Altidore, Johannsson, and Chandler (all under 25), we have a lot of promising youth players abroad, including:

Three promising strikers in Agudelo (21), who will probably land in the Bundesliga, Arriola (18) who plays in Mexico, and Flores (19) who plays in Germany.

You have some solid central midfielders in Hyndman and de la Torre (both 18, both in Fulham's youth program). You have Scott (17) in Chelsea's youth program. Winger Rubin (18) will play in the Netherlands and winger Perez (16) will play in the Serie A.

Finally you have CB Barbir (16) who is an EPL youth program now.

Our talent will continue to get better.

yeah this WC was our first post-94 generation and our first "academy/post-college" generation kind of combined

it's the tip of the iceberg, and that's ignoring all of the germanicans we may recruit in time

Yup. The improvement in talent is going to come from American kids in European youth developmental programs. Yes, that means kinds who grow up in the German youth program (as well as other youth programs).

But with the increase in American ownership of EPL teams we are also seeing more and more American kids in their youth programs. Scott, Hyndman, de la Torre, and Barbir are really good examples of this.

Yes! Love it! I mean, maybe a little early for predictions on how he'll pan out, but he is a great example of what I'm talking about.

This x1000. I don't like our youth players going overseas to the European youth academies because it can cause some conflicts in who they end up playing for if they earn dual citizenship, but that's what it takes right now. The US has to do 1 of 2 things:

1. Set up similar youth academies for the MLS, and not half arse it..
2. Make more of an effort to identify talented youth players and get them into the academies overseas.

I understand what ya'll are saying and its a valid position. But I think it's a much deeper question.

First, you need a deep pool from which to identify the players for the academies. And some type of structure to identify the promising players from this pool.

Second, you need viable academies from some entities that have the wherewithal (ie: money) to run them. I don't think the MLS is in that position right now. And I don't think the big overseas clubs see the profit/cost benefit to do it.

we're doing that. but college can't be the goal. these academies have to be the goal

you're wrong. they are already investing in US talent

We need a "Blind Side" type thing to happen, only the soccer version.

We need a bunch of rich white families to pick some kids from the ghetto and put them on some travel teams.

IDK if they still do it but there used to be the ODP system. The problem was most coaches, including mine, told us it was a waste of time. I, along with one of my teammates, made the 88' ODP pool when I was 13 and we had about 10 players make the '89 pool. We were going to do it, but the director of our club told us it was a waste of time, so we didn't.

This would be the perfect opportunity to scout the players from a young age, but only if they could get more youth coaches to put an emphasis on it.

still exists.

ODP probably isn't the answer. your pipe dream is for the success of the MLS to take off and money pours into the system thus the MLS youth academies are training and working with the US Youth Academies to train the next generation of the USMNT. as of now we rely on the youth academies of europe to develop our technical ability.
