Why did we play the second team early in gold cup and now change? Does winner of gold cup get invite to world cup?

Thanks

Winner of the gold cup gets to play the previous winner to earn a spot in the Confederations Cup.

We play lesser players against lesser competition.

O I gotcha. So they figure to play Costa Rica again in WC qualifier so want to face then with studs.

Nope, whoever wins this one plays the winner of the next one for a spot in the Confed Cup.

Disagree.

Teams send their A teams to the confed cup and us beating Spain in 2009 was a huge deal in South Africa. Had we beaten Brazil we would be saying the tournament is a big deal.

It is still a major tournament.

Since the Gold Cup is in the late summer, almost all of the European based guys are in preseason training with their teams. Now their teams are obligated to send them over here if they are called up, but it seems like USSF has a gentleman's agreement to not call any of them up.

And it seems like there is a tacit agreement amongst all the major teams to send B teams to this year's tournament as well. In fact, Mexico sent a weaker team than we did.

And they still won

But I think that's the first B team since the days when it was played in Saudi Arabia

This was my intent, but I worded it poorly. Obviously since Mexico just went to the Confed Cup this year they don't get another chance (unless they win again).

Are you saying that we couldn't benefit from playing the German team that was at the Confed cup? Because if so, that's dumb as hell

What? No. You can benefit every time you step on the field.

Then why is qualifying not a big deal? At the last one we were at in 2009 we played Italy, Brazil x2, Egypt and Spain. I'd say qualifying and playing meaningful games that if we win can boost our ranking is certainly a big deal.

Ranking only matters if you are in the top 7.
