American soccer fans and people who played are defensive and we have our reasons b/c we have been shat on for so many years. Called all kind of bullshite names and other bullshite etc.

This. If playing throughout college makes me a "soccer hipster" then okay, guilty as charged. Since this isn't our first rodeo we've heard it from everyone, Americans with suggestions on how to improve the game, and foreigners who run their mouths because they're nation is actually better than America at something.

I mean, I get it...especially around this site, the mouth breathing "football is tha best, soccer is for commies...hurr hurr hurrrr" crowd is real strong...
But then there's fans like my self whose extent of soccer knowledge is limited to playing FIFA on playstation.

I desparately hope it's Cameron. Cameron made a few bad mistakes, but we need his speed and athleticism on the field. Gonzo played in a game that was pouring down rain and there were very little attacks. In a dry game it could have been very ugly. He is simply just not that good. He's not terrible, but he's very average

For Txtiger this isn't FIFA where you can pull and plug boss. Besler is our best CB and has never played outside for us.
Don't worry i suggested we put Clarence Goodson at LB when i first started posting on here(May 2012). People on here aren't assholes(except TN Bhoy) just stick with and you will become more knowledgeable

Gonzo loses his marks so easily. If he doesn't make the acrobatic challenge to compensate for bein out of position it's a goal.

Thats what ive been saying his field awareness is awful for the international level. A few of those last ditch tackles were b/c he was out to lunch before hand.

Ok, bear with me, I actually had a crazy idea last night. What if we play both? And no, I'm not saying take Besler off because that's just silly. Funnily enough, someone already mentioned using Fabian as a wide midfielder, which Jurgen has done a few times in the past.
Since Belgium is a more powerful side with less pace (outside of Hazard), would a 3-5-2 work?
Cameron-Gonzo-Besler
Beckerman-Jones
Johnson-Bradley-Zusi
Dempsey-Altidore
Obviously, Fabian is more apt to defend, so he would do his fair share down our right (which is Belgium's left and the side Hazard will be on most of the time). Cameron plays at RB for stoke, so he would be comfortable taking on Hazard when Fabian gets caught upfield. The great defensive work of Beckerman (especially his marking) and Jones would shield the back 3. It helps that Belgium has been playing 4 CBs across their back 4, and they have not been moving upfield a ton on the flanks.
I realize this would only work if Altidore can start, and it's not a realistic expectation to see. Is it a totally stupid idea though?

I don't think there's anyway Altidore starts. Too risky. You saw what happened when Atleti started Costa in the CL final off his leg injury. If we're down a goal or tied in the 75th, bring Jozy on to give us that threat. To your latter question I just don't think you can go away from what has worked so well thus far. We get an extra day of rest and Belgium is far less tested (group wise) than we are, without Benteke they do not have that second world-class threat. I think Fabian is going to create so many problems for Belgium, but he's been doing that all tournament

Beasley has actually done a decent job of getting forward himself. He's not Fabs, but his play has warranted him retaining a spot in the 11.

Very true. I just couldn't find a way to fit him into the bigger equation if a formational switch was to occur. I fully expect to see the same, or something very similar to what we've seen so far.
And yes, I do realize that starting Altidore is likely too much of a risk. It was just a thought.

3-5-2 is hard to pull off if you've never done it before.
Posted on 6/28/14 at 12:51 pm to cwil177
We are set essentially with a 4-1-4-1. Now, Jurgy has switched things up before, but it doesn't seem as though he wants to get out of that formation
