Did he have some type of BM clause? I never understood how they sell one of their best to not only their big rival, but also the main contender for the title.

The club told him they'd sell him to Bayern but then changed their mind or something so now he refuses to sign an extension or agree to a transfer anywhere else. He'll probably go to Bayern on a free.
ETA - Also, BVB's biggest rival is Schalke.

Honest question, for a country with the size and passion for the game and a relatively strong economy why does Germany/Bundesliga not make more of a commitment to being good?

Seems like its time to sell off the big players and reinvest... start again.. could get some serious coin for Reus, Hummels and Gundogan (get Sahin back permanent in RM deal)

The Bundesliga, for the most part is competitive, the English and French leagues have the market cornered on Russian and Arab sugar daddy's... Most cant compete with the money they throw around, simple as that..

they bring in a boat load of cash every year. they don't really need to start over at all. i believe Reus is the only player left in their squad who has a buyout clause in his contract. they could easily win the bidding for Diego Costa and not would not miss a beat next season.

I think with those 3 players leaving, they would still have a decent core... and a lot of cash to bring in young players..
I think Costa is a pipe dream, from what I understand, they cant offer the wages of the EPL... I could be wrong, but thats what I seem to read... Also, AM to BVB is a step backwards in this season... only reason for him to leave AM, in Jan., is money.. Whether he wants more or AM needs it...

The Bundesliga is in very good shape financially, and new TV deals will only improve that position. BvB's revenue is right around 200m euros/yr. They were 11th in the world using 2011/12 finances. Considering their growth and their leagues growth, seems very reasonable to think that they surpassed juve and are in the top ten now. they could certainly afford Costa's wages if they wanted to. Don't think anyone gets him in January, but it seems very likely he'll be off in the summer.
