BVB tells Lewandowski he will not be sold to FC Bayern

The risk they run is that he refuses a transfer anywhere else this summer and he goes to Bayern for free in a year.

i think they know it will go down that way and are taking a stand. kind of the opposite of Arsenal and RvP last year.

Good. Even if they miss out on a ton of money, they'll find some other diamond in the rough somewhere. I would never sell him to Bayern or any of my players for that matter.

I had a similar question about why BVB goes by Dortmund while Bayern Munich is simply known as Bayern. Wouldn't it make since if both were known by their state (or whatever the German equivalent is) or their city.

potentially. though it is probably better for them not to lose Götze and Lewa in the same offseason. I seriously doubt losing him would knock them out of a CL spot, but it probably keeps them as contenders in Germany, solidifies a top 2 spot (don't know how Germany does their TV money split, but that could make them some) plus more CL money. Probably won't end up losing that much. While the RvP deal was fantastic in terms of revenue at the time, I think most Arsenal fans, particularly with hindsight considering we didn't reinvest his fee last year, would've preferred just holding onto him for a year and letting him go in the summer if that's what he wanted to do. Little different for Lewa though, depending on how ironclad his pre-contract is with Bayern. We had a slight chance to keep him if our results had been better and we had won a trophy. also, I doubt he would have gone to ManU with Sir Alex retiring.

I guess my question would be, if BVB win big and for some reason Bayern becomes less appealing, can Lewa change his mind?

CL Qualification for 2014-2015 is more important than 20 million euros. Letting him walk for free is a good move in this case. They can spend the Gotze money on reinforcements, and can spend a year looking for replacements for Lewa.

Why don't players play out their contracts and when they sign with a new team "on a free", have their transfer value negotiated on top of their weekly pay?

In this case, Lewa plays out his contract and next year signs a 4 year contract that pays him say €150k per week, tack on top of that the €20M Bayern saved by not buying him this summer.
