Take the 40mm you flippin' jackwagons
Edit: Stuffed chicken and water. I have no ice so the water is room temperature. I'll be honest, that has really put me in a crabby mood. I apologize for my harsh words but I just want to tell people to go fly a kite sometimes.

Their president is about to run for re-election so he wants to be a haradass here. The only way we get him is by activating the buyout but the taxes make it tricky

Seems like the same reason Tottenham wouldn't take the money for Luka Modric when Chelsea offered a rumored 40 mill. Stupidity, but I think more so, is it is harder for Bilbao to replace a great mid like Javi using the Basque only policy, plus they seem to inspire a lot of loyalty in their players.

Yeah I read earlier that the taxes are keeping us from activating his buyout. I don't understand why they are holding Javi AND Llorente hostage, it seems like they would want to get top dollar for them (which they are) and re-invest the money.

When you use only basque players, it maks no business sense to sell your good players to higher clubs...it's not
Ike you have tons €40 million players lying around the basque area...I would venture to say you wouldn't find 8 €5 million players, see my point...no where to reinvest that money

There are other Basque that play on other teams. Azpillacueta is basque, Xabi Alonso, et al... but Bilbao can rarely meet the wage demands once a player has moved on to a top level club. Real Sociedad is always loaded with good young talent, but are bitter rivals with Bilbao... so in the end yes it is very hard for Bilbao to reload after moving a great player.

it makes better sense to let them leave and get nothing in return, obviously

Like someone said earlier, these players have a tremendous amount of loyalty to the club....we aren't dealing with RVP and Nasri here
ETA: I do see your point though

bilbao likely can't pay half the wages these guys will command. it's not about loyalty.

Llorente has been getting a ton of attention from clubs for years now and Bilbao have been able to keep him happy and keep resigning to contracts.
Javi may be different and Llorente may want a pay day finally, but I think if neither move this window I could see them resigning a new contract by the end of the season.

La liga tv contracts may change that

martinez is talking about taking a paycut to facilitate the bayern deal, though
Posted on 8/23/12 at 9:42 pm to Harry Pitts
Loyalty? Javi Martinez offered to take 2mm less per year over 5 years to complete the 10mm gap and move to Bayern.
Llorente is refusing to sign a new deal.
Both men want to leave, very badly

They probably wont be able to keep Muniain in the long run, either...
