Bayern bought Leroy Sané, Alphonso Davies, Niklas Süle, Leon Goretzka, Serge Gnabry, Joshua Kimmich, Robert Lewandowski, Xabi Alonso, Thiago, and Jérôme Boateng for less money than Barcelona paid for Philippe Coutinho

It helps when you get a lot of free transfers of other teams’ best players.

This is what happens when your youth academy starts stalling and you don’t know what to do about it

Not really an apples to apples comparison either. Several of those guys were bought long before the market went haywire.
Liverpool paid less for Firmino, Salah, and Mane than United paid for Fred, Nemanja Matic, and Diogo Dalot. Big spenders make a lot of mistakes in the market. Law of averages.

Are you under the impression that Barcelona couldn’t do the same thing?

No but for some reason they choose not to

Not under the current leadership. They've bought and sold poorly. Sucks that Messi has been stuck in a situation where he has to drop deeper to compensate for the inability of Barca to progress play quickly. Selling Arthur, when he looks like a Xavi clone, is incredibly myopic. They've bought mildly poorly since the Cesc transfer, and frankly have been bailed out by Messi's insane production.

I'd say after the back to back summers of Neymar/Suarez..

Yeah, that was the point of the comparison. I was just responding to the comment discounting Bayern's ability in the transfer market to just getting everybody's best player on a free. That's good business, and Barcelona could pull that off more if they weren't run by idiots.

I disagree. Barca has struggled mightily in midfield since Xavi and Iniesta left, and Messi compensates by dropping deep to brilliant effect, but he would have been even more productive had Barca had a third midfielder to progress the ball up the field. Arthur was an immediately more progressive passer than Vidal, for example, which allowed Messi to receive the ball higher up the field.
Xavi did that job so effortlessly that people think any midfielder could do it. The fact that Messi has had to play deeper and deeper is evidence that Xavi played a vital role.

I'd argue Cesc because Cesc often played in front of Thiago, who was a ready-made replacement for Xavi, and who subsequently left right when Xavi was declining and when Cesc proved he couldn't play a deeper role. Thiago is a better all-around midfielder than Cesc, as Cesc was slow as shite, didn't contribute defensively, and was positionally wayward. In hindsight, losing Thiago was as big a mistake as any of their other transfer spending.

jesus christ. Xavi is probably a top 10 midfielder of all time

What’s amazing to me is that they don’t even really have depth to show for it
Two injuries and they’re having to beg la liga to let them make a signing outside of the transfer window
They’re probably going to have to replace a lot of players in the nearish future. I wonder if they’ll fix their clown car of a board before then
