yup
the problem is the league makes moves counter productive to its growth.
We have what looks to be great things in what will happen to Atlanta, killed off by the disaster in NYCFC, when its become clear the MLS was just used by City Football Group to make the Man City brand worth more so they can spend more on players.

So you want a repeat of the NASL? Because I believe the same thing would happen if they get rid of the salary cap today.

I await every opportunity to use this pic.

No, NASL was also a closed system
At the very least MLS should not have monopoly on the D1 status, let people come in and compete. Why do we even have divisional classifications without pro/rel?

How in the world can a closed, single entity league have clubs? Do you know what a club is? To call MLS outlets clubs would negate the meaning of the word.
i cant tell if you are joking or not. the meaning of the word club? that's basically anything. me and you can form a club, but at this point im not sure i want you in it.

Yes, but the owners over spent in order to keep up with one or two teams and they couldn't afford it. We just don't have that many people willing to invest in clubs at this point.

If you opened the pyramid there would be more people willing to invest.
If you opened the pyramid only the teams that overspend will be punished.

We should worry about getting all the MLS academies on stable ground before turning attention to pro/rel.

He's getting at the MLS being a franchise system
Clubs when it comes down to it don't operate on their own in the MLS.
A few of us have been talking about its issues for a while on here, but DS has taken it a whole new level of craziness.

It took about 15 years to finally get to the point where one or two guys didn't own multiple clubs.

i'm not the one who tried to pigeonhole the simple meaning of the word club. that was just the dumbest thing i've read.

AUFC does seem to be very attentive and dedicated to building the academy early. Really good foundation being laid there by the club leadership.

American sporting culture is entirely different than the world. We like our closed systems. we don't give a shite about the minor leagues. MLS/SUM is simply following the NFL business model and looks like methodical growth is paying dividends. Once TV money starts trickling in, we will see more Americans attempt to pursue soccer as a career.

they're not clubs in that sense sure but a "club" doesnt have to be that exact meaning. The toronto blue jays can be a club. I'm not the one who said "do you know the meaning of the word club" though.
again...this thread was about atlanta united. thread is complete shite now. only one attention whore to thank for that.

Youth development in this country is a whole other bag of worms, but as long as MLS continues pocketing the solidarity payments they owe we won't make much progress there, either.

If the MLS ever wants to become a top 5 league and destination for top players like the Don keeps talking about. Lots of things about the structure need to be changed. But for now to keep it stable it works.
But this top 5 league by 2022 was just nonsense.
