Falcons owner Arthur Blank is in significant discussions with Major League Soccer about bringing an expansion franchise to the city, according to two people with knowledge of the situation but who wished to remain anonymous because the discussions aren’t complete.

Blank has long expressed an interest in a team. The recent approval of the new Falcons’ stadium accelerated the talks between Blank and the league. The construction of the stadium is scheduled to be finished in 2017 and the two parties have discussed opening the stadium with an MLS game.

Writing is on the wall. Soccer explosion in America is imminent.

The ratings for this WC, in our time zone, will be unreal.

I have a son in middle school, in Texas. He plays football, and does pretty well. But soccer is huge for them. It's his favorite sport. And unlike years past, the 5-6 best football players are also playing soccer. He had 35 players from the football team over to watch US-Mexico on Tuesday.

Cities better get in now, for cheap, while they can.

Will he continue the tradition of bird mascots for Atlanta sports teams?

I want an MLS team in Atlanta. I don't want it in a massive stadium, though. I guess I'd deal with it, but we all know soccer crowds in a massive stadium (outside Seattle) are teh suck.

In the article Garber says "three of the four are spoken for." So I guess that means three cities have already been picked.

Yeah, not having a SSS disappoints me.

And who knows if I'll be near Atlanta by the time this happens.

But I'm still excited. Didn't want to see two Florida teams.

It's not like all of our teams are named after birds. Our NASL team is the Silverbacks. The Braves aren't birds. Neither is the Dream.

Other than that...

I would like to see St Louis and a Minnesota or Carolina or someone as the 23rd and 24th. Maybe Memphis or Nashville.

I also want Chivas relocated to San Diego or somewhere else in the area.

Memphis wouldn't be a good choice but Nashville could be.

I hope they don't have a mascot. Most of them suck. And I really hope they don't use the new football stadium.
