Wenger has no clue when it comes to CBs.
I agree. The irony is that some defensive discipline and coaching would win us the title. Last year we were the best team in open play both offensively and defensively, scoring 54 and conceding 20. I believe we gave up something like 23 goals in the league off set plays or penalties, which is startling. We gave up more goals on set plays than we did in open play.
Something in the mental make-up of the team has to change. We're occasionally brilliant offensively, and we showed a better ability to grind out results last year. Yet I count six games where we gave up the lead and lost points. That's pretty indefensible.
Three of the last four years, we were ranged good to great for three-forths of the season, and then one thing happens, and our mentality collapes, along with any hope for silverware.
I rue the day Eduardo got hurt, with Clichy's penalty, and Gallas's reaction. That 2007-08 team was awesome, and frankly they deserved better. Ever since then we've followed the same pattern of implosion, and I don't know what will change that. Maybe we used all our luck in the Invincible season.

I can't even remember just how many(double digit +) goals Squillaci conceded all by himself with no one else to blame. But yes as fans we were all too aware of our inability to defend set plays and crosses in the box.

Don't see any reason why Squillaci should get PT over Bartley.

Because Bartley sucks as well.

What makes you say that?

Because I watched his slow, hacking arse last season.

Yeah I figured you had watched him, but I was hoping you would be a little more specific. His pace is probably a concern with the high line we play, but Squillaci is really bad in this regard too. I watched him versus PSV and he played alright, from what I remember.

He's slow and knows it. Thus, he hacks people down to stop himself from getting beat. That works in Scotland, not in England.

If that's the case he won't make it here with the high line we play. I wish we wouldn't play a high-line because we don't press nearly as well as we should. We desperately need someone of his size.

I don't know why Squillaci is even on the team still. Lord help me if he has to play a meaningful game next year. We just need to buy a CB so he goes to 5th choice.

I'm really surprised y'all didn't bid for Toulalan.

I'm really surprised he moved. We've been linked with him seemingly every summer, along with Blaise Matudi, Obefemi Martins, and depending on the moon, Franck Ribery, Yaya Toure and Hatem Ben Arfa. If a player's vaguely French, we've been linked at some point.

Mertsacker is going to be a Gunner. A typical signing for Arsene. He and TV5 will make a decent psiring.

I hope the new Mata talk is legit. Granted it probably means Cesc is gone, but at least Mata would be a quality signing.

To be honest Bhoy, not sure if I 100% trust your evaluation on Bartley considering he played for Rangers. Your comments across the months have been far more negative than literally everything I've read about Bartley.

Me too. We will see if Valencia goes back on there pledge of not selling him.

If I'm wrong, it's not because he played for Rangers but because I'm notoriously hard on CBs.

I think Valencia's refusal is all talk personally.

Fair enough!
Also, Mata would be awesome. Would make for a crowded front 3, but depth is always nice. Hope this doesn't mean anything with regards to Nasri. I have a feeling we're just biting the bullet on him because Wenger doesn't think we can make top 4 losing Fab and Nasri. Makes more sense to keep at least one and get the CL $$$$.
