re: Arsenal's "Things Are Gonna Change, I Can Feel It! (lol, nope)" Summer Thread

My optimism is dead until we sign two good CBs. It was the height of arrogance to let our best two CBs last year leave on free transfer and then replace them with a mediocre (at best), overpriced Ligue 1 CB and an aging mediocre French CB who was and is clearly worse than the one we let go. Lorient trade raped us in that Kos deal.

Ramsey joins Nottingham Forest on loan.
LINK
Maybe signals that Wenger doesn't feel that he can afford to give first team minutes to someone just coming back from injury.

I think it signals he needs more game time (and higher quality comp.) than he will get in the Reserves. I love it. Fits right in with my predo that he'll play for Arsenal in January. Hope all goes well for him at Forest.

I was hoping he would be ready by Christmas. I also think it will be some time before he's on his best form. The idea exists that it takes you as long as you were out to regain your form. I hope Ramsey doesn't have any setbacks.

good news guys, the match is on espn2 tomorrow morning. this time, however, I'm going to record it so that I don't suffer a potential early bird defeat

Christmas is too early for Ramsey. Mid feb would be the best time for aaron to come back into the first team. RVP needs to be back to full fitness and remain standing till the end of season for us to win any trophy. nasri, wilshere and chamakh's head cant do it by themselves.

Arsene is saying he isn't going to buy in January barring injury. I hope he's merely concealing his actions, because if he doesn't buy a CB...I don't even want to speak about it.

I keep hearing rumors about Gary Cahill. Would that be a big enough CB signing?

I'm beginning to think its our organization that is the problem. We've been struggling on that end after that CL run. A GK would probably help organization more than another CB. We do need another body there though. Cahill will cost a pretty penny though. I don't think Wenger will get him. I'd be surprised if Wenger got anyone.

Also, anyone watching the game?

I wasn't able to. Damn Constitutional Law. Next semester my afternoon schedule is a lot more conducive to watching Champions League and other afternoon matches.
From the recap, I got the distinct impression Vela had a horrible match and that RvP and Wilshere made number of beautiful passes. Somebody commented on the BBC live text that "IF Arsenal had a player like David Villa we would be the most deadly team in the Premier League by a country mile. We have blown hundreds of chances already this season and yet we are still second top scorers in the league."
As much as I love what Chamakh and RvP do, it's so true. A clinical finisher who can also play our style would make us so much better. It's too bad those kind of guys don't grow on trees.
As for our CB situation, Cahill would be an upgrade, but might be too pricey. I agree that a big part of our problem is organization. A better GK would certainly help in that situation. I do think a lot of it comes from the CB's positional instincts as well. For instance, I don't have nearly as high an opinion of Tommy V as others on this board because he doesn't seem to have the positional instincts that top CBs have. ( LINK)
Last year we were greatly aided by the underrated play of Gallas and Sol (well Sol wasn't underrated by the Capello Index
) and now instead we have Kos and Squillaci, two significant downgrades.
With the talent we have now though, it sure seems like we shouldn't play as high a line as we do. We've been burned by it plenty already this season. If Wenger insists on playing that style, he should at least bring in talent that would allow us to do so. Neither Kos nor Squillaci have the pace to recover. TV5 can better than either of those two, but it'd help to have a Kolo Toure-type to pair with him. Whenever he gets back from injury.

I have pretty much given up on Wenger at this point. We all have been "this" close, but now with his lack of picking up quality center back's or goalkeepers when it was always painfully obvious how much of a weakness those areas are I just can't keep endorsing him.

What? Wegner is certainly a top five manager on the planet. He has stubborn tendencies, but that is inherent in all great coaches.

But we're THIS CLOSE from winning the Carling Cup!
In all seriousness, I don't blame Wenger for not winning trophies recently with our financial situation. We has successfully steered us through a financially tumultuous time with hardly any lag in quality. He has set us up to dominate in the new world of financial restraint in football. That said, the time for results is now, and I think Wenger is finally realizing that (just look at our CC squads this year compared to the last 5). We aren't far off from winning the Premier League this season. We have money to spend now, so I hope that Wenger is just doing his general misdirection trick through the media. I haven't given up on him yet, and don't think I will have to. As really sad as it sounds, I think winning something even as lowly as the Carling Cup could really give the squad a boost in terms of mentality.
Also, after Jose's comments re: Wenger, I think it would be a fun Round of 16 match-up if we drew Real.

frick that. I want Bourdeaux. We would kick a French teams arse.

That would add insult to the injury of getting nothing for Chamakh.

Although Bordeaux would be easier, the last (and only) time we made the CL Final we played RM in the first knockout round.

RM is bitch slapped. I want nothing to do with them.

This is true, but at the same time it is the CC, and say another top EPL team decides to field their senior side come the final?

Which in itself is amazing considering how lackluster they have been against some sorry arse clubs, and their slew of injuries.

I pray that you are correct, because knowing that there is money to spend, and there are obvious weaknesses that could and should be addressed yet nothing is done about them is really disconcerting.
All this said, something does need to be done about the fitness/character of the players which most likely stems from Wenger's philosophy. It seems like this club in particular always has players injured multiple times per season, and all for lengthy spells of time.

The remaining teams in the CC are West Ham, Birmingham City, Aston Villa, Ipswich Town, and West Brom. Anything less than the trophy would be a massive disappointment.
