The remaining teams in the CC are West Ham, Birmingham City, Aston Villa, Ipswich Town, and West Brom. Anything less than the trophy would be a massive disappointment.
Hopefully winning a trophy will give this team a winning mentality, which is why I think Wenger is taking this competition seriously. Winning this trophy might give the kids (really most of these players are still kids) the confidence, which I think is sometimes lacking, especially when we are leading games.

ATLien:
Thing is, which sides have been utterly dominant? No one really has. Chelsea is suffering from injuries, and ManU has drawn with a lot of teams that they shouldn't have. We're not at the halfway point yet (3 games away, I believe). So we still have time to fight. We're only 2 points off the top and we play United, the leaders, in 2 weeks. Carrick will be out several months for them, their back line still isn't mended, though their attack should still be quite a threat.
I also like this point:
A CC tourney ascent, and hopefully a trophy in February, could definitely provide some impetus for confidence and competition. I hope it will provide some sort of booster shot to let the entire squad know what it takes to win, even if it is a smaller competition.
Here's an interesting stats chart that crazy4lsu sexted me the other day:

Which in itself is amazing considering how lackluster they have been against some sorry arse clubs, and their slew of injuries.

That was an interesting link. Thanks for sharing.
I wish there were something like FG% for soccer. Shot % or shots per goal doesn't quite do the trick. The frustration with Arshavin is that he seems to blow so many opportunities (at least early in the season it seemed that way) and when he does blow them, his lack of tracking back tends to hurt us. That said, it can only be seen as a positive that Arshavin leads us in these categories despite not being at his best so far this season.
Now that RvP is healthy again (and apparently looked good yesterday), what do we do with he and Chamakh? How did we line up yesterday with essentially 4 strikers on the pitch?

I think it might have been Efan Ekoku, or some other commentator who said the hardest thing for a striker to do is not to score, but to merely put it on target. I think you know that's true when you mentioned the lack of consistent world class strikers like David Villa or Drogba. I don't think Arshavin is a 5 star player, so it's maybe a little unfair to expect him to put away all, or the large majority, of his chances, no matter how easy they seem. But that doesn't stop us from grimacing when he messes up gimme-goals.

Luckily RvP is very versatile and can basically play anywhere on the front line. He has even played 'in the hole.' I think he and Chamakh are very capable of playing together. Their frames may be similar, but certainly not their playing style. The only thing that's lacking is a chemistry of understanding b/t the two. They haven't played together as far as I remember.
Also, a dour addendum to my optimism above: We probably only have a 25% chance of winning with our current defensive form. We would need spurts of luck and for injuries and bad streaks to befall the other big 4, the fourth being an interchange between Spurs and City.

Interested to see who we draw out of Birmingham, Ipswich, and West Ham.

The road is paved. Now we just have to drive the car straight.
When I'm describing English soccer to my friends, I compare the season to college basketball: Premier League = conference play (albeit more important), FA Cup = conference tournament, Champions League = NCAA Tournament, and Europa League = NIT. Continuing that analogy, what college basketball event would you equate to the Carling Cup, the Maui Invitational?

I can't think of anything better.

NFL playoffs with the finals being the Super Bowl.
ETA: Once you get to the knockout stage.

Nah the Maui is definitely more like the Emirates Cup.

Amidst the WC despair here are some Arsenal-related tidbits.
-Schwarzer signs an extention with Fulham. I didn't think we were going to go after him again anyways, but this confirms it.
-Nasri good to go Saturday after picking up a knock against Wigan.
-Wenger says RvP might be held out of the starting lineup due to him just returning from injury. What do you want to bet after the Fabregas-Braga fiasco that RvP doesn't start Saturday?
-Arshavin had by far the most muted response of the Russian delegation members in Zurich. Not surprising given his muted goal celebrations. And yes there is some double, maybe even triple, entendre action there.

The match on Saturday is a must three points for da Gunners. With Chelsea at home and ManU at Blackpool, Arsenal needs a solid result at the Emirates.

Goal.com reporting Wenger said Kos out for at least 3 weeks with a concussion. So Squillaci and Djourou are all we've got for awhile. Honestly, I'd rather have Song back there than Squillaci. I feel like he's only gotten worse as the year has progressed. Djourou actually had a nice game after coming on today I thought. If Song was actually playing DM I might not suggest it, but his initial success as a box-to-box MF seems to have been an aberration. He was bad today, I thought.

Also, I feel like Nasri's second deserves a link. Loving the Ray Hudson-esque commentary as well.

"Touch of an angel". Nasri is really playing like a true superstar right now.

His first goal was equally incredible.

No doubt. Samir is a godsend for Arsenal right now.

Song is turning hella Jekyll and Hyde. At this point, I'd rather play the 4-1-4-1/4-3-3 with a dedicated DM until we figure out our defensive organization. Playing with two CM's deep hasn't helped very much, if at all. At least in the previous system, Song knew he had to cover, and if he bombed forward, he would leave the backline exposed. I saw Squid, Clichy, and Wilshere give Song a little bit of an earful, and around the 40th minute, you could clearly hear (Wilshere I think) yell "Alex! Alex!" because Song was so out of position.

I think against Man U we might run more of a 4-2-3-1 esque formation with Van Persie starting for Rosicky and playing behind Chamakh, in that role Fabregas and Rosicky have played this year. That's pretty much what he did today when he came on and it seemed to work very well. Wenger might think that too attacking at Old Trafford though. First, we need to take care of Partizan and assure a spot in the knockout stages of the CL.
