I just think he's the only one worth over 100mil.
I don't get the Barcola love.
And Alvarez scored 8 goals in LA Liga. EIGHT. WTF are we even doing entertaining that transfer.
Id rather stick with Havertz, Gyokeres and Merino as our striker options.

The game is transitioning away from possession based football with all the 1v1 man marking going on, you need people that can reliable beat their opposition and evade pressure, and Vini is that guy.
Arteta was part of several Arsenal teams who had some amazing ballcarriers in midfield, and we straight up don't have anyone of the level of Santi or even Abou Diaby or Jack Wilshere. I mean, when was the last time we saw an Arsenal player turn on a dime deep in midfield like Rosicky used to? What Arteta seems to want is physical players who can also dribble and run and defend, and it's just incredibly hard to find those players. I would rather give MLS and Ethan chances to carry the ball from deep, and I should note that when MLS carries from deep, he is almost electric.
You can make the argument that the modern game doesn't have the space, but part of what Arteta does so well is that he moves the team together to force the opposition into the shapes Arsenal wants. I'm at a loss as to why we can't seem to impose our will to allow for more ballcarrying from the dribblers we do have and have to buy a player like Vini, who I am not sure will even be allowed to carry all that much. Troussard was a ballcarrier too but he too was limited in his dribbles to zones directly outside of the box. Odegaard was brilliant during the WC with the ball at his feet, using his close control to dictate the tempo in a way I wish Arteta would allow him to do with Arsenal.
Maybe this signals a seachange in approach from Arteta, but for some reason I am very skeptical that even a player like Vini will be allowed to dribble from deep, which is something we needed in the CL final for example.

The market is completely divorced from the play on the field. Given what he does on the field, Declan Rice has to be as valuable as any other central midfielder playing, and even his price was insane.
I don't think Rogers is worth even half as much as he went for. If that's the standard, yes I can understand why PSG values Barcola the way it does.
I am just so skeptical that Arteta will use Vini in a way that won't annoy Vini, who is also not exactly the most willing runner defensively.

He gets lumped in with Mbappe in this, but Vini runs 100x more on defense.
I know the price tag will be shocking, but It is a clear upgrade, and something we sorely lack. The only winger in the world that can rival his production in the last 5-6 years is Mo Salah (in top 5 leagues)

While this is true, structurally, our build-up play almost never requires a player to run up the field with the ball at his feet, nor do we see players who come back to the ball deep in midfield, with the intent that the first-station pass is made between the lines and that the receiver intends to run with the ball after they receive it. By and large, our players are positioned so that they never have to do this and rarely if ever do we see any winger in recent memory running past a player with the ball given to them at their feet. And we tend to move the ball incredibly fast this way, as we are in the final third within five passes quite often.
Are we going to start making passes from deep through the initial midfield line so as to let Vini do what he does? There are several plays I recall of Vini turning his defender just from the fact that they are so afraid of him coming short to receive that they over-commit. One example might be Vini's goal against Bayern where he turned that Korean CB to run onto Kroos's slide-rule pass, but we rarely ask our wingers to do that nor do we afford them the freedom to move where the space is. Our way of building up play is incredibly good at getting the ball to the final third, and my suspicion is that Vini will be used as we generally used our LW since Arteta has been in charge. And thus Vini will often be 1 v 2 against opposition defences, and taking advantage of that requires the ability to move the ball side to side quicker than we like to in order to isolate Saka on the wing, and vice-versa.
Our problems in the final third are structural in my view, as we play an incredibly high line, we have massive amounts of possession per game and aren't actually a defensive team, though we do play tenacious defense. We are a team concerned with controlling spaces in every phase of the game and I am skeptical that Arteta will sacrifice that control for Vini's sake.

If we sign Bruno he can be the one picking up the ball deep and let your Odegaard or Eze just stay forward.
He was doing it for Brazil. And is in the top part of the league for progressive passes. I don't think there was an Arsenal player ahead of him.
The chances of signing Vini are pretty slim any way. There are other guys they can look at like Williams and Nusa. I also think Tzolis isn't going to be bad. People were underwhelmed with the Trossard signing and that turned out to be a good signing.

We do need a replacement for Partey and Jorginho, as a big reason we sucked in the UCL final going forward was that we had no player who could even approach making passes like those two used to. I'm also still somewhat annoyed at Bruno for elbowing Jorginho like he did. But all will be forgiven if he can play between the line passes like Partey.
I do wonder if we will see more of the double pivot next season, as Zubi would do better with a partner, and MLS's ballcarrying has to feature more prominently next season. In addition, Rice needs a break and I wish we had one more young midfielder who we could plug in to fill the gap.
Looking back at this past season, it is really incredible how we moved the ball up the field as we did.

Bruno G plays similarly to 22-23 Xhaka, will be beneficial for us.
Even if Vini isn't carrying the ball up the pitch (and I'd argue if we let him stay high he will be the demon counter-attacking threat we lack) he's one of the very best 1 v 1 playmakers and dribblers in the world against a settled block.
Allowing him to combine with Cala and whomever is playing as the 8 will be fantastic for him. Hes mainly been playing with Bums at LB since Marcelo left Madrid
I have 0 reservations about how he'll fit in the team, you fit the team to the superstar, and he is that guy. If he does sign, he'll be the face of Arsenal (to the rest of the world) maybe not to us.

We should talk more about how amazing Cala is. God I love his absolutely psychotic forward play. Cala had an insanely good understanding with Troussard in particular and hopefully his tireless running will help Vini, if he does come.
Again, to be clear, I would be happy for Vini to come here. I just wish the market made more sense.

After reading quite a bit about the situation, I think the fee will be lower than we all anticipate, as well as his wages.
The big thing about coming to Arsenal would be retaining a big portion of his image rights (he only gets 50% at most currently and only Mbappe has more for Madrid), it's rumored he'd get all 100% of his image rights here, and because the PL has bigger TV deals, more exposure, etc, etc.
Good read about it:

All will probably be for naught, but fun to consider the possibilities.

What do we do if we don't get him? I see us needing like 3 more players.

I still think they're going to get Bruno G and probably another CB to cover for Saliba. If you don't get Vini, I assume they are going to run it back with Martinelli
We're pretty set everywhere else.
Still think Jesus, Nelson, Norgaard, Vieira, and Kepa are all on the way out too.

I really wish we would get another midfielder and another attacker in addition to Bruno and that Greek guy. Given how much Rice has played this season, I am worried about his durability. He needs a rest.
We do have a lot of dead weight and it is amazing we can never move them. I forgot Nelson was even on our books until you reminded me.

If you get Bruno, you'll have this for midfield:
Rice, Zubi, Merino, MLS, Bruno for 2 spots (I view them all relatively interchangeable.
Then Odegaard/Eze/Nwaneri for the other midfield spot.
I think that is enough to give Rice some cover until he gets well.

For me, it feels by March we are always so light in midfield. That's been a trend for the last few seasons and I wish we would work harder to sign that Moroccan kid, Bouaddi, as he looks incredibly good. I also don't think Arteta sees Ethan as part of his long-term plans, unfortunately.

Looks like city will sign Bouaddi.
And Eddie Howe just walked away from Newcastle.

I don't like the fact that he's going to city to be honest. And I think Ethan is going to be sold.
Posted on 7/30/26 at 12:24 pm to crazy4lsu
I've seen it rumored that City are basically shedding all old assets in an effort to sell soon. Might have something to do with the 115 stuff
Assuming Rodri does leave, it's like: Ruben Dias, Donnaruma, Haaland and a bunch of mid to low 20s guys now.

God I would love it if they decided to perhaps sell O'Reilly. He would fit in our structure extremely well and give us cover in a lot of positions. Probably a dream though. Thank god we beat them to the title this season.
