The current school of thought, based on various cryptic tweets from guys who've been pretty spot on about our transfers so far, is that Carvalho is our plan B and is pretty much a sure thing, but we're investigating other options first. I think obviously Khedira is one, we're still hoping he'll drop his wage demands, and there's also some smoke that Arsene is putting out some under the radar Pogba feelers

It sounds like Carvalho is our plan C, if we are holding out hope on Pogba and Khedira. Schneiderlin looks like he is going to Spurs, which is a bleh move for him in my opinion.
I really want to know who we are getting at CB if/when Verm leaves. I can't see TV5 staying this season. We've been linked with pretty much no one. I have a strong feeling that some of our last signings will come out of nowhere.

how serious are the pogba rumors? to me it seems like a pipe dream as juve wont break up that pogba-vidal midfield for cheap. dont get me wrong i would jizz everywhere if we got pogba but i just dont see how that is realistic.

It's still highly unlikely, but there are a couple of factors in our favor. One is that like many French players of his generation, especially black French players, Pogba grew up idolizing players like Vieira, Henry, Wiltord, Laurent in the Arsenal colors.. Pogba has been quoted as saying Arsenal and someone else, maybe Real I forget, were the two clubs he dreamed of playing for growing up.
Second, Serie A is super poor. There's no doubt we could offer him a wage increase, and when a club/league is in as bad a spot as Italy, bids of a certain size are going to turn their heads no matter how important the player.
Third, and this ties into the second point a bit, Juve have been really poor in the CL the past two years despite dominating Serie A. And they're doing nothing to strengthen their squad, in fact it looks like they're going to sell Vidal. Depending on Pogba's personality, he might be getting tired of just dominating Serie A, and you could sell him on an uber competitive EPL and CL aspirations if he signs with Arsenal.
All that being said, it's still really a pipe dream and Carvalho/Khedira or someone out of the blue seems much more likely at this point

good points i agree with all of them. pogba is a young player who has potential to be one of the most influential players in his generation. for a player of that quality, i would imagine staying in serie A, where the publicity is probably the worst of the major leagues, wouldnt be all that appealing. it would make sense if he made a move to arsenal with a french manager and a history of french players, but he is the future of juve and they would be hard pressed to let him go

While 12 or so Arsenal players have been French since Wenger took over, Juventus have a pretty great history of Frenchmen, including Platini, Zidane and Thuram. I seriously doubt that Pogba would consider that at all. It will come down to a massive bid on our part, and a willingness on Pogba's part to leave, and come specifically to us. If Juventus lets it be known that Pogba is leaving, you better believe that Real, Chelsea, PSG, and others would be notified and try to make a bid. It would be a massive bidding war. I don't think its likely this summer though.

it's very possible that's the case. pogba's formative years were the henry/vieira heyday. I seriously doubt he grew up idolizing platini and even zidane or thuram (at least juve zz and lt) would surprise me.
that says, we don't have much of a chance at all.

I was trying to point out that lots of teams have a history of great Frenchman. We aren't the only ones. Nonetheless unless he wants to specifically come to Arsenal, I can't see us winning a bidding war.

I think that's kinda irrelevant if we're talking about a 19yo Frenchman. I think the bigger point (that the sentimental stuff is nice, but hardly a deciding factor) is right on. we could rival a bidding war these days though, at least. if AW wanted to.

Even after this summer I'm not confident. We haven't gone in on a bidding war with a player yet, with a team richer than us (though there are like 5 or six of those left). Basically we haven't gone in a bidding war against Barca or Real. The fact that we have liquidity helps tremendously, and the fact we won't fall afoul of FFP does as well. I'm sure Wenger is simply gauging Pogba's interest, as he should. He's a once in a lifetime player. But it's so unlikely that he comes here, even if he leaves Juventus.
I hope we get something done there soon. And the fact that we haven't heard anything about another CB is confusing to me. Surely TV5 can't be staying. We will need an older player to cover that position, and I honestly have no clue who we would get. Or Wenger might be daring and go for a young, promising CB. I'm still annoyed we missed out on Ginter. Would have been perfect for us.

the sentimental stuff may end up being really important because pogba said he grew up wanting to play for arsenal and barca

And he was also seen playing as Chelsea in Football Manager, with himself at CM, in a picture released during the World Cup. The reality is that none of this sentimental stuff matters. It will be all about money if he leaves Juventus. We can compete, but I'm not confident we can win his signature.

dont get me wrong, i dont think we get him either. i would be extremely pleased with carvalho though.

His wage structure would be through the roof and I don't think Wenger plays that game. Look at Khedira and his demands. Locker room harmony is important and to blow it out of the water for a young player would be very uncharacteristic. I will say that Pogba would be worth it though.

tv5 was vacationing with rvp. strip him of the captaincy immediately.

Arteta?

i'd prefer it be someone who is going to be around awhile but that may not be feasible. rambo or theo for me fit that mold. maybe kos, though i'm not sure if he really fits. if jack grew up a bit more, i could see that.
