Anyone else nervous as hell about tomorrow ?

...because I'm nervous as shite. The thought of missing the World Cup really sucks, not only because the World Cup is awesome, but also because it would seriously hamper the program's growth.

Don't get me wrong, I absolutely want to qualify. I'm just not sure it would be this huge setback that everyone makes it out to be.

You think Joe American will watch the WC if the US isn't in it? And then we go from missing this cycle to the Corrupt Cup in Qatar?

I'm a bit worried. If we lose tomorrow I'll start panicking. I feel the same way now as I did before the Guatemala home game in the last round. Traditionally, we play our best with our backs against the wall.
It would be tremendously embarrassing for us not to qualify. Our team of college kids and semi-pros qualified in 1990, so it would be humiliating for the most talented group we've ever had not to qualify. It would lose us what little respect we've earned in the international community since then.
And yeah, we need to start the rebuild immediately after 2018 to get the new generation ready, even if we take some lumps.

Creating mainstream popularity leads to more ways to monetize which means more resources... Supply and demand.

I completely agree. We aren't going to do shite if we qualify anyway.
Players aren't good enough, and won't be for awhile.

Not qualifying wouldn't necessarily damage the national team on the field beyond 2018. But it would have a huge negative impact on the growth of US Soccer's fan base and the growth of the sport as a whole in the country.
Every World Cup, many millions of Americans who normally don't care about soccer will tune in to watch, and many of them will become hooked. I was one of those kids in 2010 who got hooked during the World Cup and have never looked back. If the US misses the tournament, far fewer Americans will care to watch. Less people will become US fans. We saw on Friday how long we still have go in growing the fan base in our own country, and participating in the World Cup plays a huge part in that.
Plus US Soccer would lose a ton of money that could be invested to make us better.
Most soccer countries don't have this problem, but in countries like us, Canada, and Australia, where soccer is vying for mainstream credibility and respect, missing the World Cup is a big setback.

The US would do nothing at the World Cup regardless of who is in their group if they made it. I think not making it would cause the USSF to take a serious look at how they are developing players and change Bruce Arena as manager.

Yes, but we'd pretty much have to win the last 2 games to finish 3rd.

Bruce is almost certainly gonna retire after the World Cup regardless. He's hinted at it quite a bit. He's getting old.
