It didn't seem like we were pressing as a unit, or in groups, save for a few occasions I remember. The inconsistent pressing is what allowed Mexico to break the press, not the press itself, I'd argue.
thats probably the best way to put it

The tactics were great in the first half... picking out spots when to possess, working the ball out of the back... shite we’ve been wanting for some time.
Lack of adjustments were the problem once Mexico started crowding the midfield, not having Pulisic start coming in deeper until the 80th minute was odd, especially considering we were asking him to basically do everything in our attack.
His average touch today was further up the field that Jozy’s was.
Boyd not coming in makes absolutely zero sense. Lovitz being on the roster is a fireball offense in itself.

What has frustrated me for years with USMNT is the utter lack of ability to develop a playmaking PG in the middle. Bradley had a chance at that but he never quite got there. No one has stepped up to lead the offense.
To use a football analogy, it’s like we start every possession with two long out routes for four yards, then throw a bomb down the field that gets intercepted
So frustrating

A lot of people I think are expecting a bit much tactically. National teams do not typically have wildly complicated tactics because they don’t get a ton of time together unless you’re a Germany/Spain and have a lot of guys playing together on the same teams.
I didn’t think there was anything wrong with it early on. Clearly the subs were lacking and any sense of adjusting in the second half. Could possibly credit that to the lack of talent on the pitch but who knows.

As a City fan, watching the deep playmakers and DM like KDB and Fernandinho is insane when compared to what we throw out there.
Obviously I’m not expecting that level of play, but those guys press like animals all match and spring the ball forward non-stop and it’s full speed ahead. I feel like I see a lot of our midfield not very motivated to press, but I’d assume that’s tactics.

The biggest difference for me was in the second half Alvarez played great. Mexico's trio of Alvarez, Dos Santos, and Guardado killed our midfield and gave Pizarro that space to operate. Alvarez completely took Pulisic out of the game in the second half.
I think the biggest issue with our press was that our fullbacks sat too far back. They broke our press easily by just hitting a ball to a winger checking back who laid it off to Dos Santos and Guardado and then they had Michael Bradley in the spin cycle so to speak.
I hate hate hate hate the idea of having Michael Bradley on an island in games like this. I think the single pivot can only work if you have a guy who's a wizard playing there. Other than that, I like having options there.

He is okay in possession but woefully inadequate at defending on the counter and offers a absolutely nothing going forward.

Great point. Don’t think I heard Cannon or Ream mentioned in the second half.

There were several times where we did, but it seems like we forgot that the wings exist when we did. Generally if you press high, you'd like to funnel the ball back to where the press actually is coming from. We gave them an out pretty much every time

For a guy who is known for ball handling and passing it always seems like bradley’s First touches are kind of sloppy.
Posted on 7/7/19 at 10:33 pm to Lou Pai
I'd say Michael Bradley is an above average passer.

Generally, but he was not on the same page tonight. I’m not sure who was to blame.

He certainly has his bad games which is why I don't like having him on an island. Too much pressure and he's not athletic enough to handle Mexico's midfield.

All good points, especially about the fullbacks. The subs definitely didn't make any sense. I don't see any reason to take Jozy off that early.

Yeah, so if you half arse press like that, you basically just give the opposing team 20-30 yards right in front of your backline. Mexico was very wasteful if we're being honest. If that was a good team, we could have gotten our asses handed to us pretty bad.

there really was no cohesion the last 30 mins
no one looked or moved as a unit

100% agree. I am fine with him there in games against lesser competition where he can boss things, but against Mexico it seems like suicide no matter if this is their B team.

No doubt
He always seem to hot foot when he is pressured, struggles in the middle and like you said he is ill suited to be on an island at this stage of his career

we would have been fricked if Vela, Chica and Gio Dos Santos was out there
