In all honesty I hope it happens because I’d love to see him in the premier league before he calls it quits.

I'd imagine Pep was just a bit on the hot-seat this year. Even if City don't sign Messi, it's making people completely forget about the UCL campaign.
Imagine if they would've lost the EFL Cup as well.
