we've done it too. successfully with cesc, less so with fran merida, jon toral and hector bellerin, though the last has shown promise at RB. apparently we're trying to do the same with thiago's little brother right now.

Yeah, though I don't think that it has ever worked out for them
IIRC, they did it to Pique, Rossi, and Pogba. All three ended up moving on

Also Macheda and Petrucci from Lazio and Roma et al. Read where they've tried to sign quite a few more recently, mainly from Fiorentina's Primavera squad.
Seems that the Italian kids though have hit a developmental roadblock as soon as they get to their academy for whatever reason.

I think it's mostly that they don't play them. Pogba, Pique, and Rossi were all good enough for the first team squad, yet were not played in favor of such stalwarts as Wes Brown and John O'Shea. Pogba would have been a difference maker in United's midfield. He's going to be a superb player. I think he's the best young midfielder in the game.

I believe that they had an excuse for Pique (Vidic and Rio) and Rossi (I think that that was 4-6-0 time)
SAF definitely fricked up with Pogba

They still gave Wes Brown games at CB.
What is the point in poaching young talent if you aren't going to play it?
Posted on 6/29/13 at 6:40 pm to crazy4lsu
i would say kinda like Wenger giving Mark Randall time over Fran Merida but that didn't really work out either Merida is in Brazil now. pretty crazy. that kid had some talent.

At that level, especially with youth, it becomes a matter of mental aptitude rather than outright talent. Decision making, on and off the field becomes paramount. Merida wasn't as good as Ramsey and so would probably have been cast off sooner or later.
I mean, I don't think there could have been much of a difference between Pogba at 19 and Pogba at 20. He's an incredible player. He's the type of player Wenger would have started as soon as he was remotely ready. It's a shame because I think he would dominate the English game. If he can avoid injuries, I think he can reach Vieria levels, if not Yaya Toure.

or
Vieira level, maybe even Touré level.
Which is it?

one who i forgot that we poached then let leave is Håvard Nordtveit. didn't play him at all, now he's a highly rated, skilled DM (something we could use) who took Baby Bradley's spot and ran with it at Gladbach.

Yeah that seems like a little bit of a mistake. We should have at least gotten a bigger fee for him. I don't know if he would have slotted right in our side, but he could have competed for a spot with Coquelin and Frimpong. I think Wenger had higher expectations for Frimpong, as he was called up to the first team the same year as Wilshere, and was just as prolific on the youth level, albeit in a defensive role.

The Draxler kid was one of the best highlight vids I have seen...he just got a new fan and I have a reason to watch Schalke now
