I think in this instance it was probably more of an instance of him thinking to himself , “I feel like I should say something nice... but how? What? This is going to be hard to come up with something nice. But I have to say something... eyes, yeah, go with the eyes... that’s almost believable and I might be able to pull it off with a straight face and come across almost sincere.”
