If people want to pay someone's water bill, I'm all for it. It's their money and they can do what they want with it.

I'm glad these people will have water again. However, I'm thinking a lot of these cases aren't going to be solved at the root of their problem. What happens 6 months from now when these same people are 6 months behind on their water bill again?

Sounds negative, but I don't trust the people of Detroit to actually learn from this and use this charity to move forward and be more responsible. Hopefully I'm wrong.

ETA: Maybe I'm crazy, but the word "charity" to me never implies any connotation of being permanent. I'm of the opinion these Detroit citizens have the opposite view.

I'm all for this, and I think it's a great illustration of public welfare without the need of gov't force.

ETA: but Spidey, to think that most of these people can't afford $20-50 a month for water is asinine. Water is such a basic need that it should trump all other bills in order of importance. You're telling me these people can't put away $10 a week for something that they need to survive?

This is what I question the most.

Outside of rent, which I'd imagine they receive help on, water is your next bill. It just seems absolutely improbable that someone who isn't homeless can't afford $40-$60 per month for the most important necessity on the planet.

Those people posting those pictures of themselves with their water bill revealed a lot about how people in that city prioritize their needs. If you have fresh nails, new jewelry and expensive electronics in the background of that picture, then you aren't getting sympathy from anyone about not being able to afford water.

It's unfortunate they are in this position, and I'm all about people helping them out...but I just can't foresee the situation changing six months from now.

Good post. But you forgot spinners. It's not on that diagram.

I'm pretty sure it's a civil right.

Those poors - using running water to flush their toilets! Holy frick they think they are entitled or something. This is America! Disposal of sewerage isn't a matter of public concern here. We have freedom instead.

I think this is a great program. How much have you donated?

Agreed. Unfortunately Tuba and people like him truly believe every "poor" person in this country is in their current situation due solely to social injustice and not because of poor choices and lack of self accountability and responsibility.

If the former were true, then it's easy to take his approach to the issue and call everyone selfish and "poor haters".

Unfortunately he, along with millions in this country, choose to be ignorant, stick their fingers in their ears and feed the issue versus solving it at the root.

They are "giving a man a fish" instead of teaching him to fish

Easy now - this is private charity, not government overreach. This is the kind of social safety net conservatives should want.

Just what I was thinking.

Have very many of the protesters' water service actually been cut off?

A newly elected mayor of a local town took office to find $25,000 in delinquent water bills. He led efforts to enforce their shutoff policies, and within 3 months the delinquency amount was less than $1000.

Kinda like how the Catholic Church takes donations and then pays for people's water - and other - bills?

Uh probably b/c the catholic church is a charitable organization perhaps?
