I get out and bike a lot. After about the 100th time this year seeing a young male in a mask walking with nobody within 200ft of him I thought, “If there’s another world war we’re fricked”.

There used to be the concept of “citizen soldier”. One expected to serve when called and to do so to protect hearth and home. That concept is valid. If the use to which the military is put is perceived to be invalid (i.e. brushfire wars without end), then dissension and demoralization follow. I was a draftee placed in the infantry in wartime and served in combat. By the end of my year in Vietnam, I went from seeing whites, blacks, chicanos (Hispanics) working and functioning together at the beginning as brothers to seeing two black guys try to kill their commanding officer (White) in his sleep with a thermite grenade because they were afraid and racist. I think there should be mandatory military service, men only in the combat arms and the strictest physical and mental test applied. Then, everyone make sure we’re asking of the service personnel only that which one would ask of a “citizen soldier” to protect his country.

Prior to the Occupy Wall Street event I would have said yes. Maybe even a year or two after it. Now though? I don't think so.
The problem we have now is the entitlement mindset among the youth has reached critical level. They believe it's their right to protest anything they wish in any manner they wish and that no one has the right to stop them. When someone does stop them, they lay down, kick, scream and cry that they are victims. Putting these blithering idiots into the military might help some but would do little more than cause even more acting out (not just among those in the service but their supporters who would not be there due to age, medical issues, etc).
Remember, these are the loud types that throw bricks from afar then scatter when faced with actual resistance. These are the types who would harass elected officials with a mob, eventually pushing them to repeal such legislation.
So, no. It's too late for that.

Some of the attitudes on here, without an alternative solution to deviate from the OP...is nothing more than a continuum of the "do nothing" excuse that presently condemns hundreds of thousand of poor young black and white kids to damnation on the streets.
That attitude screams the same result that would better served in an abortion clinic. Then there would be nothing to bitch about when the absent youth are never marching down the streets because they have been replaced by populations to the south because the present youth, with no future, had theirs counted on a parts count abortion tray.
Job Corps is a disaster. Education worst. There must be a solution or this nation is lost.
