Why NC should think twice about the massive Buc-ee’s planned on I-85

GLANTZ Over the past few years, proposals have been made to build the first Buc-ee’s in North Carolina along the busy Interstate 40/85 corridor. For readers who may be unfamiliar, Buc-ee’s is a Texas-based chain of convenience stores, known for their massive size, unique snacks and extensive selection of novelty retail goods. Mathew Gendle I’m a silly guy at heart, and on one hand, I love the idea that this Buc-ee’s might provide travelers with a place to rest, use a clean restroom and browse a seemingly endless selection of humorous tchotchkes. After all, the Carolinas have a long history of embracing interstate highway kitsch at well-known establishments such as South of the Border. On the other hand, I am concerned by what Buc-ee’s represents, particularly within the context of the global environmental crisis. Buc-ee’s locations are enormous — often featuring more than 100 fuel pumps and over 50,000 square feet of retail space packed with cheap souvenirs and consumer goods. And I believe that this excess makes Buc-ee’s a prime example of end-stage American consumerism at its worst. A large proportion of the non-food items that Buc-ee’s stocks are cheap, foreign-produced novelty products that are certain to lose their perceived value once the purchaser’s road trip has ended. These aren’t heirloom objects to be treasured and passed down across generations. Rather, I would bet that nearly every non-consumable item for sale inside a Buc-ee’s will end up in a landfill within five years of purchase.

Hot takes:

- I like Buc-ees
- I doubt I have much in common with this writer and this blurb is annoying
- "We should probably think a bit more seriously about whether we fill our community with stores that sell junk and where the appeal is centered on laughable levels of cheap consumerism" is a solidly conservative take, actually

I plan all of my travel to include a stop at Buc-ees. Great place to refuel, eat and shop. They sell a lot of top line products at good prices. The wall of Jerky is great as well as the brisket sandwiches. Buc-ees your one stop shop for just about everything you want while traveling.

Buc-ee’s
Sometimes, it is hard to remember that twenty years ago, Buc-ees was a single-pump, beer-and-bait shop located on a glorified farm road about half a mile inland from the Intracoastal Canal.

I've bought a LOT of beer at that little store, but I've not been there in maybe 12-15 years. Probably updated by now.

Here's a thought a-hole, just don't shop there. This is the kind of Karen type that wants to walk up and yell at some dude in an F250 and also thinks that their food just magically appears at the grocery store.

In the meantime, Buccees, HEB, and Whataburger are 3 of the greatest things inventions from the Republic of Texas.

So true. My parents bought my sister a painted shell with her name on it while we were making a pitstop at a Stuckey's on the way to Florida in the 60's. Her children are all calling dibs on it when she passes away.

Actually some of the gift items are quite nice and things you would find at home good stores.
Most people go for the novelty, food, snacks, and bathrooms.

Somebody told me that the couple that started the first one also had a cleaners. They divorced, she kept the cleaners and he kept the gas station.

Ambrosia. When I am at Buc-ees, I buy several bags to take home. I wish I could honestly say that they last for weeks ... but they don't.

That guy has plenty of places to sit and pee wen they open.

In 50 years 90% of white males will be "you know whats" exactly like this.

Pretty much what every store near that location would pay someone to say

My family calls them Beaver Balls, rather than Beaver Nuggets.

I suspect that we are not alone in that.

Nothing about that is a conservative take. It's an authoritarian take from someone who wants to tell everyone else what he thinks one should or shouldn't do with their money.

A conservative, would say "let the free market determine what to sell, and the consumer is free to spend their private hard earned money on whatever the frick they want."
