No expert, but I see Louisiana, with a population of 4,684,333 has 64 parishes.

New York, population of 19,849,399, has 62.

California, population of 39,536,653, has 58.

There seems to be not much rhyme or reason to this nationally. Who the hell knew, for instance, that Georgia had 159 counties? See here.

When the state was founded, most people walked or rode horses. This necessitated smaller boundaries for local government.

One of the reasons was to have someone be able to leave their house in the morning, get to the parish/county courthouse around midday, conduct your business, then make it home by nightfall.

The need for so many parishes has been outdated for decades.

Yeah, you’re never going to see me arguing against the decentralization of government, so yay, Louisiana.

Of course it's not like these places are individual bastions of their own novel political thinking.

Pretty sure the Civil War had something to do with it.

Look at a map of Louisiana before.

Well sure, but as a libertarian, I unflinchingly support people’s ability to afflict themselves with their own stupidity, as long as it doesn’t affect anyone else
