Modern-day Dems have hijacked the term, like they do with so many terms. Example: "Affordable Care Act".

quote:

New deal

Not true Liberals

quote:

civil rights

Not true Liberals

quote:

worker rights

Not true Liberals.

You could say "statism" always wins out. That is currently promoted by both parties, with one party clearly for it, while the other backs it while claiming to be against it.

"Liberalism" as it is currently defined means no standards and no personal responsibility for anything*. Of course that's going to win when voters are like 5 year olds who have the ability to vote themselves unlimited ponies and lollipops.

*except of course for their political opponents

Is that why modern day Repubs concede to Dems/Progs and give them their way?

Bush was supposedly against Progressive ideals, yet we got Tarp and mercury-filled light bulbs (among many other prog ideals).

I could do this all day.

Like I said, statism always seems to win.

Pure delusion.

What philosophy is the "Government get the frick out of my way and let me live my life without Draconian oppression and oversight?" That's my philosophy.

I do care about social problems and I do care about others than myself. I just don't like the government telling me what group of people I have to care about and support with my money. I'd rather do it on my own accord. Because you know, freedom and all that shite.

That's not a refutation. He is correct. The left favors strong centralized govt as opposed to individual freedom. This is why the left includes communists and socialists. The right favors smallest govt possible and maximum individual freedom and responsibility.

This is why Obama chastised free markets in a speech a few months ago. To paraphrase: "Some want to just let free markets do as they please. History tells us that doesn't work."

No, you can't. If conservative = status quo then the word has no political meaning at all. If 10 different countries had 10 different forms of govt ranging from anarchy to monarchy, then the party in power of each would be conservative.

By your definition, Obama is a conservative because his presidency is the status quo.

this is a huge oversimplification

if you honestly believe that mainstream american liberals are communists then i don't know what to tell you. You're too far gone to help.

I could take very extreme right wing philosophies and try to tie them to modern american conservatives if i wanted to, but i recognize how ridiculous and unfair that would be.

That's libertarian which is a subset of the larger term conservative.

I'm not an anarchist. Far from it. I believe in taxes. I just don't want to b4 taxed to support other people's bad decisions or government intrusion on the free market.

it sounds like you've bought the right wing's spin, which is fine. I'm not going to sit here and write a novel to explain why your perceptions are wrong right now.
