re: Why do we have ‘registered sex offenders’?

I already acknowledged they aren't the norm or even common.
Its virtually nonexistent, and even if it was real, why not fix the one small issue instead of abolishing the registry entirely? It’s like saying parachutes are bad because one time a guy got strangled in the cord.

As someone who doesn't want to be robbed, I want to know all the convicted burglars around me. Why can't I know that? Legally speaking these people have paid their dues to the state. Why do you as a parent have the right to even more justice?

My issue is that the sentence you just wrote should not have the middle word.

And I tend to agree with this.
My biggest issue with the registry is inclusion of people who really shouldn't be on it(even if rare).
But, overall, it's problematic for the reason you stated.

Because there’s basically nothing more unAmerican than “we’re keeping you locked up past your sentence because of something we think you might do”.

Alas, I think what you could have written better is

I mean, clearly, being on those registries is still punishment.

Because our legal system refuses to hang those who need hanging.

Unfortunately, looking at the recidivism rates from the dept of justice, most criminals will reoffend (a whopping 2/3rds will within 5 years).

Good point, despite the court systems absurd rulings that it’s not a punishment.

Despite what the internet says, our legal system is extremely lenient.
Relative to what exactly?

The threat is minimized by letting everyone know who they are.
When I was 6, the supervisor of maintenance of our 16 buildings occupying a city block was involved in child molestation.
After he was back at work all kids knew to stay clear of him.
Word spread like wildfire.
This was before registration and computers.

When you put people on a list that essentially assures they will never have a chance to be hired for a job, is it really a shock that these people that have nothing but free time and no future to look forward to offend again?

If you are a child molester, you SHOULD be killed.
cause that's how the law sees it.

I think it's more likely that a burglar was rehabbed in prison, than a pedophile has been rehabbed in prison...have you ever heard of a pedo quitting it like a smoking habit?

I see a lot of this kind of stuff on Facebook. It seems that people have lost the concept of crime and punishment. When you're convicted of a crime, you receive a sentence. Whether that sentence is 15 minutes, or 15 years, once you've served that sentence, they can no longer hold a person in jail legally. I'm sure there are avenues to getting additional judgments against a particular person, but apparently being a child molesting piece of trash only matters if they are moving into the judge or lawyers neighborhood, because they turn them loose at even a level 4, which is stated as a high likelihood of re-offending.
It's why we need the death penalty for most, if not all child molesters.

So, would you support allowing children to arm themselves for protection? Because most adults can do just that. It's not the parents that have the right to even more justice, it's for the innocent and vulnerable.
