I agree with you, and I don’t think liberals are fascist. However, big government socialism cannot exist without heavy-handed coercion. Once implemented it becomes so disreputable, and unsustainable - I mean the industrious and clever being yolked to support the lazy - that brute force must be increasingly used. Since that sort of brute force is a main feature of fascism, it’s a natural association to make.

It’s important to note that liberals and progressives aren’t the same thing. In fact, classic liberals have more in common with conservatives than progressives. Progressives have lost the plot and are loathed by every other group.

I’ve posted this many times on the Rant, to near universal disapproval, but it’s still true: The political spectrum is a circle, and if you move far enough to the right, while another moves far enough to the left, you will meet at the bottom where suppression of free speech, forced worship of the leader, and military suppression of the individual are de rigueur.
