I had two staff members that did nothing but federal paperwork for steel, copper and mineral oil. Had a set level for overhead and a flex level for size and material margins to calculate bids for wind and solar farms. Regular utility business was set at a fixed level.
Hated wind and solar, but, they served to drag the company out of the gutter. No one realizes that every wind and solar farm has multiple distribution transformers. I used wind to set us back to making budgets each year. Cost my 60 year old design specialist his job on the second day I was in place.
When you bid on multi million dollar projects, pick up the phone and ask where you land in your bid. He wasn’t making phone calls. I took over, closed 15 projects in one day…….he was retired in our one on one meeting, as I made the phone calls.
Didn’t bother him anyway. Momma had passed away, he and his brother sold the farm for millions. I helped the old boy to retire sooner than he planned. Nothing like kicking a momma’s boy out the door.
